Excerpt from Outline for Review American History When the close of the year's work approaches, the teacher of history is confronted with the problem of bringing out the subject as a whole, and of so focusing it as to make the picture clear-cut and vivid in the pupil's mind. Text-book and notebook and classroom work have each done their part in arousing the imagination and informing the memory - how shall the prominent figures and the smaller details, the multitude of memories and impressions so made, be fixed and established in their proper perspective? It was the effort to solve this problem that produced this series of Outlines in Greek, Roman, English, and American history. They were first privately printed, and have been experimented with for several years. The result has been so gratifying, in accomplishing the end in view, as to suggest that they might prove similarly useful to others; hence, their present publication. The Outlines have been enlarged and revised in collaboration with a colleague of wide experience in preparing pupils for college, Mr. E. B. Treat, who has used them in their original form, and who therefore brings the valuable assistance of independent experiment and experience to the work of improvement and revision. It cannot be too emphatically said that the Outlines should not be introduced into the class until after the work of the text-book is finished - they are preeminently intended, as their title indicates, for review. Excerpt from Outline Guide to American History by the Source and Library Method The problems before us today are the legacy of those who have preceded us, - the results of their successes or failures. This makes history a living science, no longer to be regarded as a mere culture study, dependent upon the 'memory alone. Today the genuine study of history demands the exercise of all the mental faculties in determining motives, com paring situations and drawing conclusions. This can not be done by reading one meager text book. Dif ferent authors must be read to get different points of view. Better still is the present tendency to send the pupil directly to the original source, whether it be a newspaper clipping, a speech, a diary account, a letter or a government record. How much more meaning the Compromise of 1850 has when one reads the speeches and debates of that time! The original sources are constantly being made more available to the student. Every teacher should own, and may the time soon come when every pupil may own, the sheldon-barnes American history, or some similar collection. The following Outline Guide is putin print for the Convenience of the Iowa State Normal students, but may possibly be useful to others. It is not intended that any one student shall use all the references given, but different students using different books will bring a variety of opinions to the class, whichmust be discussed and accounted for. Six or eight good texts have been cited throughout, and such other books as have been found most helpful. History, as Used in the Class Room of the Author This little book has been prepared, as its title indicates, as a guide for a topical history class; and has been used by the author for many years with marked success. It will, also, be found very useful for reviews or for reference. For use in the class, we would recommend that first the outline at the heading of each chapter be thoroughly learned (where no outline is given, the paragraph heads may be used). Let each pupil be able to write it upon the board; or, one write as the others dictate. Next study each item; the number for each lesson must vary with their importance and the capabilities of the pupils; but be thorough. The more kinds of text-books the better, as each author will have something that the others have not. Review often. Trace the causes of every important event; also, its effects. Any goo-d anecdote that you may give concerning an event, will help to impress that event upon the pupil's mind. Show them that peace is better than war, and that Hon esty is the best policy; giving as examples such contrasts as Richard H. Lee and Burr, Washington and Arnold, or Jackson and Buchanan. Do not dwell upon the detail of battle but upon its cause and effect. Learn few dates; a few important ones to mark epochs around which the others group - what care we whether a battle was fought May Ist or August 16th? We wish for results.
