Excerpt from Outlines of Chinese History The present book was written for two classes of Chinese. 'to those who are studying English, it is not so much an attempt to teach Chinese History by English as English through the medium of Chinese History. Certainly it will prove doubly interesting to read the facts of the history of one's own country in a foreign tongue which he is making an effort to learn. To those to whom Chinese History must otherwise remain unknown, it is hoped that the Out lines may induce them to seek further knowledge from the original sources. The recent events which are introducing a new epoch in China make a study of our ancient institutions doubly necessary. Excerpt from An Outline History of China The consequence is that, to the best of the writer's knowledge, there is no work in English giving the student such a sketch of pre-Manchu times as will enable him to grasp the singular continuity of Chinese political and social life. It is too much for the writer to suppose that he has completely filled the gap, but it is hoped that he has made some such contribution as will bring home to many in our schools and colleges some part of the interest which lies behind the veil. It is impossible here to mention all the sources to which this book is indebted. Most of them will appear from the notes and from the attached bibliography. Special acknowledgment, however, should be made to the writings of Professor Hirth of Columbia, G. Pauthier, Abel Remusat, Chavannes, Legge, Williams, Giles, Mayers, Douglas and D. C. Bougler. Excerpt from A Sketch of Chinese History The present volume is written to meet a practical need. The author has long felt in his work as a teacher the want of a short history of China. Of larger histories, and of monographs treating fully of some one period, there is no lack, but a concise outline of Chinese history accenting the turning points in the life of the nation has not yet been produced. To reduce the voluminous native histories of China to a small compass is undoubtedly an ambitious undertaking, but yet it is a task that someone must attempt. The average student has not the time nor the inclination to wade through the cumbrous volumes which exist at present, and when he ventures to do so, he often becomes discouraged because of the impossibility of remembering the strange and difficult names of the persons and places with which the pages are crowded, and so perhaps lays down the book without having gained any very clear impression of the history as a whole. It is hoped that this brief survey of the entire field may be of service in making it easier for the reader to fix in his mind the salient points of the long story. In the spelling of the names of persons we have followed as far as possible one system throughout, namely, that of Professor Giles of Cambridge University. Excerpt from An Outline History of China, Vol. 2: From the Manchu Conquest to the Recognition In view of the kindly reception the first volume of this Outline History has had at the hands of the press and public, the author is hopeful that the completion of the work will be as generously judged. It still, however, seems necessary to emphasize the fact that the book is neither a com plete history of China nor a selection of episodes chosen according to the writer's taste. The word Outline is intended to be taken literally. The bulk of the book might all too easily have been increased, but in that event the idea of writing a brief, fairly-proportioned sketch would have re mained unfulfilled. One or two critics have com plained of the prominence of military episodes. The only excuse that need be made is that (as the Vicomte b'ollone has so often repeated) Chinese history is unfortunately very full of campaigns which cannot be left unchronicled if a true pic ture is to be presented. At the same time the Kulturgeschichte has by no means been neglected. The philosophers and literati undoubtedly con tributed much to Chinese history. Nevertheless, the framework of the story must necessarily be political and the effect of such a work as the present would have been invertebrate had not thedynastic changes been carefully observed. The author believes that those who take the trouble to make this general outline their own will appreci ate as they have not done before the ample ma terials provided elsewhere for filling up the gaps which have been deliberately left. Excerpt from China of the Chinese The above general plan, with its broad outlines, represents neither the popular nor the academical method of viewing Chinese history. The former pictures a misty past, in which figures of the great Patriarchs and great Sages, the Builder Of the Great Wall and Burner of Books, with here and there a chivalrous hero, are dimly discerned, and later epochs, of which the knowledge is also misty, known as Augustan Ages of Chinese literature and poetry, all of which are completely overshadowed by the modern periods of foreign intercourse and foreign wars, openings for trade and robbing of territory which, though of historical value, are accorded too large a space in the picture to constitute it a properly proportioned representation of the whole of Chinese history. Excerpt from The Chinese Empire, Vol. 1: Historical and Descriptive, Illustrating the Manners and Customs of the Chinese, in a Series of Steel Engravings, From Original Sketches This Work has been produced with a View to illustrate, by means of Steel Engravings and descriptive letterpress, the manners and customs, arts, sciences, and antiquities of the Chinese empirez China is a peculiar country, and its inhabitants are a peculiar people - perhaps the most peculiar people on the face of the earth. Though possessing many claims to our attention, and these claims being continually added to by the ever-increasing intercourse between that country and other nations, their habits and surroundings have never yet been adequately brought under the notice of the public. The series of Engravings with which this book is illustrated will, it is believed, do much to supply this deficiency. They have been engraved from drawings taken on the spot, and may be relied on, in every case, as depicting, with truth and accuracy, the scenes they represent. Aided by the accompanying descriptions, it will be found that a better and truer notion of things Chinese is here embodied than can elsewhere be gained. Excerpt from Chinese Pictures: Notes on Photographs Made in China Out in the country there are practically no roads, as we understand roads. It is necessary to cultivate every inch of available ground, and the farmer begrudges anything taken from the fields for the paths, which are but a foot or two wide. It is easy to understand that, under such conditions, the almost universal mode of passenger transit is by chairs and bearers. The narrowness of the paths is a source of trouble. When two parties of bearers approach each other, there is much shouting to induce one or other to return and make way but when both come on, one has to get off, or be pushed off, into the swamp by the sides. When one is a foreigner his portion is invariably the swamp. The bearers are patient, much-enduring people, who do their work thoroughly and without complaining, in the face of mud, and rain, and difficult roads. They will carry a traveller from twenty to twenty-five miles a day. When a lady occupies the chair the curtains are rigidly closed. It would be at the risk of her life to travel in an open chair. There is much etiquette connected with the getting in and out of chairs, which wise travellers never neglect. The photograph is of a lady's chair.
