Kinderen zijn niet op te delen in stukjes Een kinderleven speelt zich af op vele plaatsen: op school, thuis, op straat, bij vrienden of familie, bij de muziek- of sportclub, en soms ook op plekken waar zij professionele hulp of begeleiding krijgen. Kinderen komen zo in aanraking met andere kinderen en volwassenen in allerlei rollen. In Amsterdam leven veel kinderen. De ontwikkeling van hun talenten, van hun welbevinden en van hun deelname aan de samenleving is van groot belang voor henzelf, voor de toekomst van Amsterdam en voor de samenleving in zijn geheel. Voor veel Amsterdamse kinderen gaat deze ontwikkeling niet vanzelf. Kinderen die buiten de ring (buiten de ringweg A10) van Amsterdam wonen bijvoorbeeld krijgen van huis uit niet altijd voldoende ondersteuning, motivatie en bagage, terwijl van de buurten waarin zij opgroeien ook niet bepaald een positieve invloed uitgaat. Er zijn in Amsterdam veel organisaties, instituties en initiatieven die een bijdrage proberen te leveren aan de ontwikkeling van Amsterdamse kinderen en jongeren. Dit gebeurt zowel vanuit wat we hier de reguliere sociale infrastructuur noemen – het onderwijs, de kinderopvang, het buurtwerk, de jeugd(gezondheids) zorg, politie, de gemeente, enzovoort – maar ook vanuit particulier initiatief, zoals de Weekendschool of Campus Nieuw West. Om zich te kunnen ontwikkelen, is het voor kinderen van belang dat zij worden gezien en uitgedaagd en dat hun wordt gevraagd hoe zij zich voelen en wat zij zouden willen, dat zij worden gecorrigeerd, verzorgd en geholpen of juist met rust worden gelaten. Waar, wanneer of door wie dat gebeurt, zijn daarbij instrumentele vragen. Het is voor kinderen niet interessant wie zich vanuit welke professionele discipline, organisatie of bekostigingsstroom met hen bezighoudt. In deze lezing vertelt Hooge dat zij vanuit de onderzoeksprogramma’s binnen het Kenniscentrum Onderwijs en Opvoeding met collega-lectoren de komende jaren zal werken aan de integratie van onderzoek in het onderwijs.

Evidence has shown that individuals leaving school without qualifications are four times more likely to be unemployed than those with qualifications. Preventing and combating unemployment therefore requires active measures both in the labour market and in the institutions responsible for preparing the future workforce - educational institutions. Attempts to remedy this problem have so far largely neglected children from socially excluded families - one of the most vulnerable groups in education. The right to learn explores a wide range of strategies, both at the policy level and in the field, to improve educational success among such disadvantaged children, taking stock of good practice in a selection of EU member states, chosen to reflect the diversity in systems and policies that currently exist. The book suggests that a number of strategies are effective and feasible. The authors recommend that a sufficiently powerful opinion movement is needed to promote the transfer of experience and action on different levels. They conclude with several suggestions for good practice - not just equal opportunity and equal treatment but also equal outcomes strategies. The right to learn is important reading for teachers, school administrators, educational researchers, policy makers, NGOs, parents' associations, those engaged in youth services and teacher training, and in formulating policies to secure the social integration of the young generation.

"The Netherlands is home to one million citizens with roots in the former colonies Indonesia, Suriname and the Antilles. Entitlement to Dutch citizenship, pre-migration acculturation in Dutch language and culture as well as a strong rhetorical argument ('We are here because you were there') were strong assets of the first generation. This 'postcolonial bonus' indeed facilitated their integration. In the process, the initial distance to mainstream Dutch culture diminished. Postwar Dutch society went through serious transformations. Its once lily white population now includes two million non-Western migrants and the past decade witnessed heated debates about multiculturalism. The most important debates about the postcolonial migrant communities centeracknowledgmentgement and the inclusion of colonialism and its legacies in the national memorial culture. This resulted in state-sponsored gestures, ranging from financial compensation to monuments. The ensemble of such gestures reflect a guilt-ridden and inconsistent attempt to 'do justice' to the colonial past and to Dutch citizens with colonial roots. Postcolonial Netherlands is the first scholarly monograph to address these themes in an internationally comparative framework. Upon its publication in the Netherlands (2010) the book elicited much praise, but also serious objections to some of the author's theses, such as his prediction about the diminishing relevance of postcolonial roots"--Publisher's description.
