Otto de Kat onthult de werkelijkheid achter zijn recente roman Het uur van de olifant, waarin hij een vergeten multatuliaanse klokkenluider over Nederlandse oorlogsmisdaden op Atjeh tot leven wekt. Oorlogsmisdaden die tot op heden ‘officieel’ niet zo mogen heten, zoals blijkt uit het artikel ‘Klokkenluiders en doofpotten’ van Jurjen Pen. Dik van der Meulen belicht de invloed van Multatuli op de schrijver Nescio en Elsbeth Etty laat zien hoe verregaand columnist Hugo Brandt Corstius alias Piet Grijs zich – aangemoedigd door zijn bewonderaars – vereenzelvigde met Eduard Douwes Dekker. Tekenaar Dick Matena, die ‘Saïdjah en Adinda’ verstripte, vertelt dat hij op jonge leeftijd geraakt werd door het gedicht ‘Ik weet niet waar ik sterven zal’ en Liesje Schreuders recenseert Tom Phijffers boek Vuur, vuur!, over een cold case uit de Max Havelaar. Romancier Gustaaf Peek tenslotte ontmaskert Multatuli’s vermeende zelfspot in Minnebrieven als eigenliefde en houdt al doende ook een aantal hedendaagse schrijvers (en recensenten) een spiegel voor.

Over Multatuli opent met een oproep om niet alleen het slavernij- en koloniale verleden te herdenken, maar ook het verzet daartegen. Er zou een ‘nationale antikoloniale herdenkingsdag’ moeten komen, stelt historicus Sander van der Horst in een meeslepend verhaal over de antikoloniale activist Ernest Douwes Dekker, die zich liet inspireren door zijn oudoom Eduard. Hoezeer de auteur van Max Havelaar in Indonesië wordt beschouwd als inspiratiebron voor de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd, blijkt uit Jacqueline Bels verslag van haar bezoek aan het antikoloniale Museum Multatuli in Lebak. Liesje Schreuders vergelijkt in dit honderdste sterfjaar van Louis Couperus zijn De stille kracht met Multatuli’s Max Havelaar. ‘Beide “Indische romans” houden verband met het Nederlandse koloniale erfgoed en behoren tot het beste dat de moderne Nederlandse literatuur te bieden heeft.’ Verder in dit nummer veel aandacht voor de onthullende biografie van Multatuli’s muze en tweede vrouw Mimi Hamminck Schepel, een openhartig interview met schrijfster Marion Bloem en een intrigerende beschouwing van scenarist Ger Beukenkamp over zijn theaterstuk Multatuli. Het leven van een klokkenluider in twintig dialogen. Elsbeth Etty schrijft over het nog altijd actuele pak van Sjaalman en Dik van der Meulen vond nieuwe biografische feiten over Multatuli in de correspondentie van Carel Vosmaer. De column van Abdelkader Benali gaat over racisme: ‘Ik begreep ineens wat voor indrukwekkende bijdrage de roman kan leveren aan het corrigeren van onrecht wanneer een schrijver als Multatuli zich opwindt.’

This chapbook centres pedagogy within a new model of museum practice that prioritizes community. It focuses on two cultural institutions in Indonesia, the Pagesangan School in Yogyakarta and the Lakoat.Kujawas in Mollo, East Nusa Tenggara, and uses the concept of the ‘commons museums’, which encompasses heritage, memory, and knowledge production to shape futures. The historical theft of cultural heritage and the extraction of natural resources are situated in Indonesia’s post-Reformation context, with collective archives becoming methodologies for survival. The commons museum expands perspectives around restitution, foregrounding collective research and community struggles as instruments for restoring justice and recovering knowledge.
