“Over There” is a 1915 account of life on the 'Western Front' during the First World War by English writer Arnold Bennett. The Western Front was the central area of battle during the war. It was defined by a line of trenches created by both sides that stretched from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier with France and which changed little during the war. This volume will appeal to those with an interest in the First World War and especially the horrors and hardships of life for those on the front lines. Enoch Arnold Bennett (1867–1931) was an English writer. Although he is perhaps best remembered for his popular novels, Bennett also produced work in other areas including the theatre, propaganda, journalism, and film. Other notable works by this author include: “Helen with a High Hand” (1910), “The Card” (1911), and “Hilda Lessways” (1911). Contents include: “The Industrious Apprentice”, “The Zone of Paris”, “On the French Front”, “Ruins”, “At Grips”, “The British Lines”, “The Unique City”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with an introductory essay by F. J. Harvey Darton.

We were met at a poste de commandement by the officers in charge, who were waiting for us.And later we found that we were always thus met. The highest officer present-General, Colonel, orCommandant-was at every place at our disposition to explain things-and to explain them withthat clarity of which the French alone have the secret and of which a superlative example exists inthe official report of the earlier phases of the war, offered to the Anglo-Saxon public throughReuter. Automobiles and chauffeurs abounded for our small party of four. Never once at anymoment of the day, whether driving furiously along somewhat deteriorated roads in the car, orwalking about the land, did I lack a Staff officer who produced in me the illusion that he was livingsolely in order to be of use to me. All details of the excursions were elaborately organised; neveronce did the organisation break down. No pre- Lusitania American correspondent could have beenmore spoiled by Germans desperately anxious for his goodwill than I was spoiled by these Frenchwho could not gain my goodwill because they had the whole of it already. After the rites of greeting, we walked up to the high terrace of a considerable chateau close by, and France lay before us in ashimmering vast semicircle. In the distance, a low range of hills, irregularly wooded; then a river;then woods and spinneys; then vineyards-boundless vineyards which climbed in varying slopes outof the valley almost to our feet. Far to the left was a town with lofty factory chimneys, smokeless.Peasant women were stooping in the vineyards; the whole of the earth seemed to be cultivatedand to be yielding bounteously. It was a magnificent summer afternoon. The sun was high and a fewhuge purple shadows moved with august deliberation across the brilliant greens. An impression ofpeace, majesty, grandeur; and of the mild, splendid richness of the soil of France

From the balcony you look down upon massed and variegated tree- tops as though you werelooking down upon a valley forest from a mountain height. Those trees, whose hidden trunks makealleys and squares, are rooted in the history of France. On the dusty gravel of the promenade whichruns between the garden and the street a very young man and a girl, tiny figures, are playing withrackets at one of those second-rate ball games beloved by the French petite bourgeoisie. Theirjackets and hats are hung on the corner of the fancy wooden case in which an orange-tree is planted. They are certainly perspiring in the heavy heat of the early morning. They are also certainly in love. This lively dalliance is the preliminary to a day's desk-work. It seems ill-chosen, silly, futile. Thecouple have forgotten, if they ever knew, that they are playing at a terrific and long-drawn momentof crisis in a spot sacred to the finest civilisation. From the balcony you can see, close by, the Louvre, with its sculptures extending from JeanGoujon to Carpeaux; the Church of St. Clotilde, where Cesar Franck for forty years hid his geniusaway from popularity; the railway station of the Quai d'Orsay, which first proved that a terminusmay excite sensations as fine as those excited by a palace or a temple; the dome of the Invalides; theunique facades, equal to any architecture of modern times, to the north of the Place de la Concorde, where the Ministry of Marine has its home. Nobody who knows Paris, and understands what Parishas meant and still means to humanity, can regard the scene without the most exquisite sentimentsof humility, affection, and gratitude. It is impossible to look at the plinths, the mouldings, thecarving of the Ministry of Marine and not be thrilled by that supreme expression of national art.And all this escaped! That is the feeling which one has. All this beauty was menaced with disasterat the hands of beings who comprehended it even less than the simple couple playing ball, beingswho have scarcely reached the beginnings of comprehension, and who joined a barbaricingenuousness to a savage cruelty. It was menaced, but it escaped. Perhaps no city was ever in acuterperil; it escaped by a miracle, but it did escape. It escaped because tens of thousands of soldiers inthousands of taxi- cabs advanced more rapidly than any soldiers could be expected to advance. "Thepopulation of Paris has revolted and is hurrying to ask mercy from us!" thought the reconnoitringsimpletons in Taubes, when they noted beneath them the incredible processions of taxi- cabs goingnorth. But what they saw was the Sixth Army, whose movement changed the campaign, and perhapsthe whole course of history."A great misfortune has overtaken us," said a German officer the next day. It was true. Greaterthan he suspected. The horror of what might have happened, the splendour of what did happen, mingle in the awedmind as you look over the city from the balcony. The city escaped. And the event seems vaster andmore sublime than the mind can bear

The riveting true story of America's first modern military battle, its first military victory during World War One, and its first steps onto the world stage At first light on Tuesday, May 28th, 1918, waves of American riflemen from the U.S. Army's 1st Division climbed from their trenches, charged across the shell-scarred French dirt of no-man's-land, and captured the hilltop village of Cantigny from the grip of the German Army. Those who survived the enemy machine-gun fire and hand-to-hand fighting held on for the next two days and nights in shallow foxholes under the sting of mustard gas and crushing steel of artillery fire. Thirteen months after the United States entered World War I, these 3,500 soldiers became the first "doughboys" to enter the fight. The operation, the first American attack ever supported by tanks, airplanes, and modern artillery, was ordered by the leader of America's forces in Europe, General John "Black Jack" Pershing, and planned by a young staff officer, Lieutenant Colonel George C. Marshall, who would fill the lead role in World War II twenty-six years later. Drawing on the letters, diaries, and reports by the men themselves, Matthew J. Davenport's First Over There tells the inspiring, untold story of these soldiers and their journey to victory on the Western Front in the Battle of Cantigny. The first American battle of the "war to end all wars" would mark not only its first victory abroad, but the birth of its modern Army.

Hollywood's conversion to sound in the 1920s created an early peak in the film musical, following the immense success of The Jazz Singer. The opportunity to synchronize moving pictures with a soundtrack suited the musical in particular, since the heightened experience of song and dance drew attention to the novelty of the technological development. Until the near-collapse of the genre in the 1960s, the film musical enjoyed around thirty years of development, as landmarks such as The Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St Louis, Singin' in the Rain, and Gigi showed the exciting possibilities of putting musicals on the silver screen. The Oxford Handbook of Musical Theatre Screen Adaptations traces how the genre of the stage-to-screen musical has evolved, starting with screen adaptations of operettas such as The Desert Song and Rio Rita, and looks at how the Hollywood studios in the 1930s exploited the publication of sheet music as part of their income. Numerous chapters examine specific screen adaptations in depth, including not only favorites such as Annie and Kiss Me, Kate but also some of the lesser-known titles like Li'l Abner and Roberta and problematic adaptations such as Carousel and Paint Your Wagon. Together, the chapters incite lively debates about the process of adapting Broadway for the big screen and provide models for future studies.

Over There: War Scenes on the Western Front by Arnold Bennett In June, 1915, the War Propaganda Bureau arranged for Bennett to tour the Western Front. Bennett was deeply shocked by the conditions in the trenches and was physically ill for several weeks afterwards. His friend, Frank Swinnerton, later recalled, "he visited the front as a duty, and was horrified at what he saw and felt that he must not express that horror." Nonetheless, Bennett agreed to provide an account of the war that would only encourage men to join the British Army. The result was Over There: War Scenes on the Western Front (1915), finally available again in this quality paperback reissue. It is required reading not just for all history buffs, but for students of psychology, political science and advertising as well.
