Ovid is now firmly established as a central figure in the Latin poetic canon, and his Fasti is his most complex elegy. Drafted alongside the Metamorphoses before the poet's exile, it was only published after the death of Augustus, and involves a wide range of myth, Roman history, religion, astronomy and explication of the calendar. In its aetiology and conversations with gods, it is a Latin equivalent of Callimachus' Aetia. This invaluable new commentary on a central book of the poem explores Ovid's playful inversion of genre, his witty but challenging style of Latin, his use of the elegiac couplet, intertextuality and much more. With a comprehensive introduction providing key background for students and instructors, this guide to Book 3, the first in English for nearly a century, makes use of the latest scholarly research to illuminate Ovid's wide-ranging and amusing account of Roman life.

Ovid's poetical calendar of the Roman year is both a day by day account of festivals and observances and their origins, and a delightful retelling of myths and legends associated with particular dates." --from back cover.

Book IV of the Fasti, Ovid's celebration of the Roman calendar and its associated legends, is the book of April and honours the festivals of Venus, Cybele, Ceres, and their cult, as well as the traditional date of the foundation of Rome and many religious and civic anniversaries. Elaine Fantham accompanies her commentary with a revised text and an extended introduction. Besides including surveys of language, style, versification, and textual transmission, the introduction looks at the shifting generic traditions of Greek and Roman elegy, and situates Ovid's composite poem in its Augustan literary and historical context. Other sections explain the recurring religious, astronomical and dynastic material of the Fasti. It has been a particular concern to relate features of Book IV to the other books of the Fasti and to Ovid's other elegiac works, and the Metamorphoses.

This thesis is a commentary; a line-by-line analysis of the poetic devices, language, themes and structure of a section of Book 3 of Ovid’s Fasti. That section comprises lines 3.459-808, which include episodes arranged by the festival dates of March in the Roman calendar, and also the risings and settings of the constellations in the sky. Thus the significant sections of the poem are ordered by date. The catasterism of the crown of Ariadne, Cretan heroine and wife of the god Bacchus, into the constellation Corona occurs on the 8th of March. The Equirria is an ancient horseracing event on the 14th. On the 15th, the famous Ides of March, there is a popular festival to the unusual goddess Anna Perenna, but also remembrance of the assassination of Julius Caesar. The 17th is the Liberalia, in which aspects of this festival to the god Bacchus, also called Liber, are explained. The commentary format devotes in-depth attention to each of these passages, explores the effect of these diverse stories juxtaposed against each other, and responds, where appropriate, to various interpretations that have been placed on the passages in modern scholarship.

Ovid A Very Short Introduction written by Llewelyn Morgan and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-24 with Literary Collections categories.

"Vivam" is the very last word of Ovid's masterpiece, the Metamorphoses: "I shall live." If we're still reading it two millennia after Ovid's death, this is by definition a remarkably accurate prophecy. Ovid was not the only ancient author with aspirations to be read for eternity, but no poet of the Greco-Roman world has had a deeper or more lasting impact on subsequent literature and art than he can claim. In the present day no Greek or Roman poet is as accessible, to artists, writers, or the general reader: Ovid's voice remains a compellingly contemporary one, as modern as it seemed to his contemporaries in Augustan Rome. But Ovid was also a man of his time, his own story fatally entwined with that of the first emperor Augustus, and the poetry he wrote channels in its own way the cultural and political upheavals of the contemporary city, its public life, sexual mores, religion, and urban landscape, while also exploiting the superbly rich store of poetic convention that Greek literature and his Roman predecessors had bequeathed to him. This Very Short Introduction explains Ovid's background, social and literary, and introduces his poetry, on love, metamorphosis, Roman festivals, and his own exile, a restlessly innovative oeuvre driven by the irrepressible ingenium or wit for which he was famous. Llewelyn Morgan also explores Ovid's immense influence on later literature and art, spanning from Shakespeare to Bernini. Throughout, Ovid's poetry is revealed as enduringly scintillating, his personal story compelling, and the issues his life and poetry raise of continuing relevance and interest. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Excerpt from Ovid; Fasti, Books III. And IV Part I. contains (a) Introduction, (b) d104, (c) Notes. Part It. contains (a) Test Papers, and (b) Vocabulary. Part III. consists of a translation. Before beginning the d104 read the Introduction, in order to obtain a general idea of the subject-matter, referring to it subsequently as occasion requires. In a final reading, immediately before the Examination, all important points in it should be carefully committed to memory. In reading the d104 the chief object should be to arrive at the meaning with as little help as possible, but nevertheless to ensure perfect accuracy. There will probably occur, even in the first sentence, (a) some words which you do not know, and (b) some difficulty in seeing the exact construction. For the first, turn to the Vocabulary; for the second, to the Notes. If there occur any words which you do not know and which do not appear in the Vocabulary, write them neatly down, with their meaning, in two columns upon the blank pages left for the purpose, adding genitive cases or principal parts, etc., exactly as has been done in the case of the printed words. After doing your utmost to make out the passage in this way, turn to the Translation, and see how far you were right. The Translation is not intended to save you the trouble of making out the meaning, but to serve as a test of your accuracy and to correct your errors.
