Trovandosi a contatto con questa curiosa massa che invade il loro mondo, la colonia di Sirene e Tritoni in cui vive l’emarginata Scilli, cede alle lusinghe della novità, che portano i più ad interpretare la nostra spazzatura come progresso. Torna anche l’istanza morale, proposta nel primo libro e amplificata nel secondo in cui la coerenza etica di Cecilia diventa quasi ossessiva fino a sconfinare in una pericolosa diffidenza anche verso chi non se lo merita. Nello scritto di Cecilia lo snodarsi della vicenda segue in modo simmetrico l’evolversi di quella della giovane autrice, finchè in entrambi i casi, la via d’uscita consisterà nel cedere all’apertura verso le persone giuste, ragazzi come lei con i quali poter vivere un contatto profondo e soddisfacente, finalmente riuscendo a sperimentare amicizia, fiducia, condivisione e amore.
