Otto secoli di vita di una grande università racchiudono senz’altro tesori umani, culturali e sociali che è opportuno e necessario illuminare, raccontare, lasciar rivivere. Soprattutto se questi secoli scorrono in una città relativamente piccola, creando rapporti speciali e storicamente originali. È la doppia vita dell’Università di Padova e dell’Università in Padova, una storia di compenetrazione, non sempre pacifica o scontata, che ben affiora in questo volume dedicato all’età contemporanea, quando l’Ateneo si configura non solo come un centro propulsore per il progresso della conoscenza umanistica e scientifica, ma anche come fucina di pensiero e azione politici. Se in età liberale l’Università è centro generatore di élites professionali e politiche di rango nazionale, nonché uno dei nuclei dell’irredentismo, a ridosso del primo conflitto mondiale essa è fulcro della mobilitazione interventista. Durante la dittatura diviene roccaforte fascista – segnata dall’espulsione di professori, studenti e tecnici falciati dalle leggi razziali – ma anche sentinella antifascista, incarnata nella figura del rettore Concetto Marchesi. E poi, oltre al coinvolgimento di tanti studenti e professori nella Resistenza, il ruolo decisivo dell’Università nella lotta di liberazione del Veneto. Dalla fine degli anni sessanta fino ai primi anni ottanta lo stragismo di estrema destra e il terrorismo del «partito armato» sconvolgono Padova, e l’Università in particolare, che ne diviene una sorta di laboratorio politico; eccezionale è d’altronde la risposta intellettuale, con il grande contributo dato proprio dall’Ateneo patavino alla «comprensione» del fenomeno terroristico italiano. Negli ultimi trent’anni la dimensione scientifica e «intellettuale» riprende nuovamente vigore, nel quadro di una sequenza di trasformazioni economiche, politiche, tecnologiche e culturali che sollecitano enormemente le strutture tradizionali delle università, sospingendo quella di Padova, in prima fila tra i grandi atenei in Italia sul piano della ricerca e della didattica, sulla via di sempre più marcate sfide internazionali.

Vol. 1: Life Giotto (1334) is the first European artist about whom it is possible to write following the schema of "life and work". The situation of the sources, however, is complicated: On Giotto's life, there are – on the one hand – biographical accounts from the mid-fourteenth century onwards that responded to various ideological requirements (patriotism, humanism, Renaissance ideology, cult of the artist); on the other, there is extensive documentary material from Giotto's lifetime, which seems to reflect less the biography of an artist than that of a bourgeois businessman resolutely climbing the social ladder. The present volume focuses on this second aspect of the Giotto figure's double life relating it to the form of existence of the pre-modern artist. Vol. 2: Works The paintings examined and contextualised in this volume are those secured for Giotto through early written sources. These sources also help to reconstruct the sequence of his works and artistic inventions as is plausible in the context of media culture in the decades around and after 1300: while Giotto was spiritually and intellectually formed in the sphere of the Florentine Dominicans, his artistic path began in Rome in the shadow of the Curia. The breakthrough to his own artistic concept came immediately before and during his work in Padua. In addition to prominent churchmen, ecclesiastical institutions, and the King of Naples, his clients were predominantly members of Italy's urban and financial elites. The adoption and further development of his inventions by other - especially Sienese - painters pressured him in his later years to try new approaches again. Vol. 3: Survival Giotto is considered by many to be the founder of modern painting. This thesis is discussed and modified in the present volume on an empirical basis. What emerges is that Giotto's impact cannot be reduced simply to the introduction of the study of nature. Rather, his art was involved in the development of pictorial idioms that were attuned to the skills and interests of their audiences. The new approaches in his painting contributed in particular to the possibility of examining and communicating psychological, narrative and allegorical content of great complexity outside the media of language and text, which not only changed the face of European art but certainly contributed to the intellectual opening of Western societies.

Catalogo della mostra a Padova, Centro culturale Altinate San Gaetano 15 giugno - 2 settembre 2018 Il viaggio de L'Immaginario Italiano, mostra nata nel 2014 al Vittoriano di Roma per celebrare i 90 anni dalla fondazione di Istituto Luce, approda a Padova dopo aver percorso in un tragitto a zig zag le tappe di Mantova, Catania, Matera e Napoli. Mostra in itinere nel doppio senso dello spostamento geografico ma anche dell'evoluzione dei contenuti. Non si tratta infatti di una riproposizione di quanto visto nei luoghi che hanno preceduto quest'ultimo allestimento, ma di una edizione “dedicata” perché la ricchezza dell'Archivio Luce consente di personalizzare parte dei contenuti adattandoli alla città ospite. E così i visitatori vengono affascinati da un doppio rispecchiarsi: si rivedono nei luoghi dove abitano e si rivedono nelle immagini di un Paese la cui storia li ha coinvolti e accompagnati per quasi un secolo. L'effetto che se ne ricava è di fascinazione perché in questo modo la storia del Paese entra nelle storie personali. L'Italia, se pur unificata non solo politicamente ma negli eventi che l'hanno modificata (le guerre, lo sviluppo economico, l'evoluzione dei costumi, l'alfabetizzazione, la modernità, la sua cultura e il suo cinema, la televisione...), ha saputo straordinariamente conservare proprie identità locali, tradizioni, musiche, paesaggi che ne fanno un unicum nel panorama geografico, storico e culturale del mondo.
