This book reviews published research concerning outcomes for deaf children with cochlear implants. The publications selected for review meet certain criteria - they were all published in English, they were published since 1994, and the number of children included in each study was at least 12. A thorough literature search was carried out yielding about 200 articles meeting these criteria. Paediatric Cochlear Implants considers a range of outcomes including use of audition by children, the development of language and quality of life. Advances in cochlear implantation that affect outcomes are also discussed. The book offers critical summaries of relevant papers and an account of the conclusions of the research to date, highlights topics that have received less attention and suggests a framework for considering outcomes. It evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of current research with suggestion for possible future developments. This book will be of interest to all professionals and researchers concerned with deaf children, to parents of deaf children and to purchasers of healthcare services.

The book discusses communication practices, including sign language for deaf children with cochlear implants and the role of augmentative/alternative communication for children with multiple disabilities. Focusing exclusively on cochlear implantation as it applies to the pediatric population, this book also discusses music therapy, minimizing the risk of meningitis in pediatric implant recipients, recognizing device malfunction and failure in children, perioperative anesthesia and analgesia considerations in children, and much more. Cochlear Implants in Children is aimed at clinicians, including neurotologists, pediatric otolaryngologists, audiologists and speech-language pathologists, as well as clinical scientists and educators of the deaf. The book is also appropriate for pre-and postdoctoral students, including otolaryngology residents and fellows in Neurotology and Pediatric Otolaryngology.

Parent Perceived Challenges Related To The Paediatric Cochlear Implantation Process And Support Services Received In South Africa written by Aaqilah Bhamjee and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Cochlear implants categories.

The aim of this study was to determine parent-perceived challenges related to the paediatric cochlear implantation process and support services received in South Africa (SA). This multicenter survey study involved six cochlear implant (CI) programs throughout SA. The study sample included 82 parents of paediatric (©Ø0́ʻ℗Þ18 years) CI recipients. A questionnaire was developed to explore parental challenges regarding the CI process, educational aspects and support services received. The financial implications of cochlear implantation, including CI device maintenance, was identified by parents as the most prominent challenge. Financing issues were the highest scoring reason that attributed to the delay between hearing loss diagnosis and cochlear implantation, as well as the greatest barrier to bilateral implantation. Parent-perceived educational challenges included finding adequate educational settings specific to the individual needs of their child and a shortage of trained teachers equipped to deliver intervention services to children with CIs. The presence of one/ more additional developmental conditions and grade repetition were significantly associated with more pronounced parent-perceived educational challenges. The three support services that parents considered as most critical for their implanted children to achieve optimal outcomes were speech-language therapy, tutoring in the school system and counselling. Parent guidance, financial support and guidance to discipline the child with a CI(s) were the three support services deemed most critical for parents of paediatric CI recipients. A greater understanding of parent-perceived challenges will guide CI professionals to promote optimal outcomes, evidence-based service delivery and on-going support to paediatric CI recipients and their families. Study results imply a call for action regarding financial and educational support for paediatric CI recipients in SA.
