During Qing dynasty China, Italian artists were hired through Jesuit missionaries by the imperial workshops in Beijing. In The Shining Inheritance: Italian Painters at the Qing Court, 1699–1812, Marco Musillo considers the professional adaptations and pictorial modifications to Chinese traditions that allowed three of these Italian painters — Giovanni Gherardini (1655– ca. 1729), Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), and Giuseppe Panzi (1734–1812) — to work within the Chinese cultural sphere from 1699, when Gherardini arrived in China, to 1812, the year of Panzi’s death. Musillo focuses especially on the long career and influence of Castiglione (whose Chinese name was Lang Shining), who worked in Beijing for more than fifty years. Serving three Qing emperors, he was actively engaged in the pictorial discussions at court. The Shining Inheritance perceptively explores how each painter’s level of professional artistic training affected his understanding, selection, and translation of the Chinese pictorial traditions. Musillo further demonstrates how this East-West artistic exchange challenged the dogma of European universality through a professional dialogue that became part of established workshop routines. The cultural elements, procedures, and artistic languages of both China and Italy were strategically played against each other in negotiating the successes and failures of the Italian painters in Beijing. Musillo’s subtle analysis offers a compelling methodological model for an increasingly global field of art history.

Le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen présente du 27 mars au 19 septembre 2010, les collections d'art italien de l'Accademia Carrara de Bergame. Cette prestigieuse institution lombarde a été fondée en 1796 par le comte Giacomo Carrara, collectionneur, mécène et fin connaisseur de peinture. Son impressionnant patrimoine, qui comprend plus de mille huit cents œuvres, fut enrichi successivement par plusieurs collectionneurs illustres, tels le comte Gulglielmo Lochis ou le grand historien de l'art et connaisseur Giovanni Morelli. L'Accademia se trouve actuellement fermée pour travaux et le musée de Caen saisit cette occasion pour effectuer un choix dans ses prestigieuses collections qui ont très rarement quitté leur lieu d'origine. Réunissant plus de 80 tableaux, de la Renaissance au XVIIIe siècle, l'exposition fait la part belle aux artistes issus des écoles vénitienne, florentine et bergamasque. La collection Morelli C'est l'une des collections majeures de l'Accademia Carrara, elle illustre le goût d'un amateur éclairé du XIXo siècle. Giovanni Morelli critique d'art italien (Vérone 1816- Milan 1891), mit au point une méthode que l'on nomme depuis "morellienne", par laquelle il devrait être possible, en étudiant les détails morphologiques des personnages d'un tableau, d'en reconnaître avec certitude l'auteur. Il est évident que la méthode "morellienne" relève du déterminisme de l'esthétique positiviste et qu'elle dut une partie de son grand succès à la vogue de la science expérimentale entre 1850 et 1880. Ses écrits sont présentés sous la forme d'une revue des attributions courantes de quelques pinacothèques italiennes et allemandes, et ils portent essentiellement sur la peinture italienne. Morelli légua à l'Accademia Carrara de Bergame sa collection de peintures, comprenant une centaine d'oeuvres. A côté de tableaux lombards et d'un groupe de peintures flamandes et néerlandaises, cette collection était surtout remarquable par ses panneaux du quattrocento : Portrait de Lionello d'Este par Pisanello, oeuvres importantes de Lorenzo Monaco, Pesellino, Botticelli (Histoire de Virginie), Neroccio dei Landi, Signorelli, Costa, Matteo di Giovanni, Botticelli.
