Excerpt from Pagan Ireland There is an old tale told in Ireland of a loveable and bright and handsome youth named Donn-bo, who was the best singer of "songs of idleness," and the best teller of "King-stories" in the world. He could tell a tale of each king who reigned at Tara from the Tale of the Destruction of Dind Righ, when Cobthach Coelbreg was killed, down to the kings who reigned in his own time. One night before a battle, the warriors said: "Make minstrelsy for us, O Donn-bo." But Donn-bo said: "No word at all will come on my lips to-night; therefore, for this night let the King-buffoon of Ireland amuse you. But to-morrow at this hour, in whatever place they and I shall be, I will make minstrelsy for the fighting-men." For the warriors had said that unless Donn-bo went with them on that hosting, not one of them would go. On the evening of the morrow Donn-bo lay dead, his fair young body stretched across the body of the King of Erin, for he had died in defending his chief. But his head had rolled away and lay amongst a wisp of growing rushes by the water-side. At the feasting of the army on that night, a warrior said: "Where is Donn-bo, that he may make minstrelsy for us, and tell us the King-stories of Erin?" Excerpt from Pagan Ireland, an Archaeological Sketch: A Handbook of Irish Pre-Christian Antiquities The descriptions which follow, of ancient re mains traceable to Pagan times, are derived from the accounts of various explorations and surveys made, in each branch, by competent arch&ologists, and are here reproduced - ih many instances in the very words of the writers. The Bibliography at the end of the volume comprises a list of upwards of one thousand papers and works, by about three hundred differ ent authors. Ah idea may be thus conveyed of the vast scaffolding erected for the building of a comprehensive guide to pre-christian archae ology. In such a plethora of literature the principal difficulty lay in selecting the best and most suitable material for the purpose. Excerpt from Irish Druids and Old Irish Religions Ireland, whether viewed from an antiquarian or an ethnological point Of View, is one of the most interesting countries in the world. It is not the less an object of attention from the fact, that in its early history there are traces of nearly every kind of pagan belief. It is curious that its literary treasures should have been so long neglected. Of late years, thanks to literary and scientific societies, including the new association fostered by Sir C. Gavan Duffy, Irish mss. Have engaged much thoughtful investigation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Archaeologia Hibernica: A Hand-Book of Irish Antiquities, Pagan and Christian; Especially of Such as Are Easy of Access From the Irish Metropolis We may venture to say that in like manner there are, even among our Tipperary gentry, many better skilled in the fortifications of the Rock of Gibraltar, than in the exquisite monuments of ancient Irish piety and art remaining upon the Rock of Cashel, in their own county; many who. Excerpt from A Hand-Book of Irish Antiquities, Pagan and Christian: Especially of Such as Are Easy Access From the Irish Metropolis Not a few of the subjects upon which it is my province now to treat have, especially of late years, excited considerable attention not only in Ireland, but even in countries beyond the limits of the British Empire. Much has been already done, yet much remains to be accomplished. It is not sufficient to have shown that Ireland contains an unbroken series of monuments, many of them historical, which lead us back, step by step, to a period long anterior to the conversion of her people to Christianity, - to have formed museums, - to have translated annals and manuscripts relating to her history and antiquities a feeling should be awakened in the breasts of the people generally to preserve with scrupulous care the numerous remains of early Irish art 'with which the country everywhere abounds, and which frequently, in local history, form our only records. The anxiety which the various governments of Europe, even the most despotic, evince for the preservation and con servation of their antiquities shows how widely their importance is recognized. It is even so, especially of late years, in America. In the following pages I do not promise my readers any very wonderful discoveries, any startling facts. Excerpt from The Fireside Stories of Ireland Beings of superhuman power, both in human and bestial forms, abound, some good and others evil in their nature, thus testifying to the worship of inferior divinities and of animals. Morality was not an essential feature of the original narratives, but it is as curious as agreeable to mark the trifling extent of the evil element throughout. Perhaps some improvement was effected in the tales as they passed from the pagan to the christian story tellers. Some indeed of an unedifying character have remained even to our own times, but such as these will not be found in our collection. Excerpt from Wakeman's Handbook of Irish Antiquities It has been too much the custom in the past to look upon Ireland as being especially favoured with a wealth of antiquities, Pagan and Christian, more or less indigenous to the soil, and independent of the successive waves of influences sweeping from the _mediterranean littoral, and from Central Europe, ever westward and northward. Light can be thrown on problems still unsolved only by following the more scientific method of inquiry pursued, and by applying to them the knowledge gained in the wider field of European research.
