Research is finally acknowledging that sex differences in pain perception are experimental opportunities rather than obstacles. For the International Association for the Study of Pain, 32 specialists in 18 contributions explore basic biopsychosocial considerations for sex, gender, and pain research; and sex-related differences in experimental pain responses, and in clinical conditions (e.g. headache disorders, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome). The concluding paper by K. Berkley (neuroscience, Florida State U., Tallahassee) proposes a developmental lifespan framework for the complex issue of whether there is characteristic female pain as vs. male pain. Fillingim is in the U. of Florida's College of Dentistry. For those keeping count of such matters, there is about a 40:60 percent ratio of female to male authors. Objectives:To compare self-compassion between men and women with Chronic Pain. Background:Research suggests associations of self-compassion with mental health and well-being. Self-compassion interventions could help improving mood in Chronic Pain patients. A recent meta-analysis revealed males had slightly higher levels of self-compassion than females, with small ES(d= .18).Given marked differences in the prevalence of Chronic Pain between men and women, it is importantto study if there are differences in self-compassion depending on gender, and if gender makes adifference on the amount of improvement after Mindful Self-Compassion intervention.Materials and Methods:Cuasi-experimental design. We conducted Mindful Self-Compassion program on 74 subjects withChronic Pain at Hospital Universitario La Paz.8.5% male and 91.5% female. We measured self-compassion before and after intervention with Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). Wecompared the ability of self-compassion prior intervention between men and women with a t Studenttest, and also compared the mean gain on the SCS after treatment depending on gender, also t testwas conduced. p value was 0.05.Results and Conclusions:No significant differences between gender were found on self-compassion at the beginning, beforeMSC intervention (t=-0.348; p>0.05) in Chronic Pain patients.Mean gain on self-compassion for menafter MSC intervention was 0.9996 and for women was 0.1529. No significant differences were foundon mean gain on self-compassion, after intervention, depending on gender. ES of change for bothgroups together is 0.16: MSC produced a small change in self-compassion both in men and women.MSC for women with Chronic Pain is as effective as for men with Chronic Pain.
