From the PREFACE by Fredericka A. Jacks, publisher: These writers recall not only the suffering but also the courage demonstrated by those who are sick and by those who participate in their illness. The writings consistently reminded us, in some ways, of Paul Tillich's expression (and the title to one of his books), the courage to be. In many of these writings the reader will be grasped by the human need for connection and the desire for existential meaning when confronted with pain and suffering. In pain we suffer a fear of non-existence and want to forget, but in the anxiety of forgetting we risk denying life. From the FOREWORD by John F. Lennon: PAIN AND MEMORY refuses to shy away from looking at those tender moments of pain. Whether it is unflinchingly writing about the moment of death ("Mack the Hermit") or trying to come to grips with the loss of a loved one ("Cartography") or the reeling that happens at the end of a relationship ("Heartless") or attempting to understand an injury ("After the Accident") or finding the exact words to discuss the feeling of being abandoned ("Kiribiri"), this anthology does not Hollywoodize pain or sanitize its imprint on those who are affected by it. Instead, these stories pull back the gauze that hides the day to day wounds of our lives and, with surgical precision, allows us to viscerally experience them. In the process, what this anthology will allow us to do as readers is revisit our own stories that we comfortably tell and retell, forcing us to dissect our own memories under the harsh light of truth. And if we are brave enough to look at this pain, as these authors do, what we might discover is a strength that reveals itself at the core of our humanity. After all, if it is true that from our birth to our death we are wrestling with pain, then, as these stories can attest, we are also spending every second of this time persevering as well.

The relationship between pain and memory has been explored through multiple perspectives and approaches. One area that has been less defined is the impact of pain on prospective memory. While studies have found a negative relationship between pain and prospective memory, little is known about the potential mediators or moderators of this relationship. The purpose of the current study was to verify previous findings and to evaluate attention and emotional regulation as mediating variables. Data were collected from a university sample and a sample recruited based on recurrent pain and/or chronic pain. Measures included self-report and online cognitive tests. The use of subjective measures, objective measures, a university sample, and a reporting pain sample provided a more holistic evaluation of each factor and their interactions. Differing patterns were found between samples and between subjective and objective measures. Attention and emotion regulation did not significantly mediate the relationship between pain and prospective memory. Further elucidation of pain and memory interactions could be particularly beneficial to those with chronic pain conditions and cognitive decline.

The Memory Of Pain written by Camila Loew and has been published by Rodopi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with History categories.

In this book, Camila Loew analyzes four women’s testimonial literary writings on the Holocaust to examine and question some of the tenets of the fields of Holocaust studies, gender studies, and testimony. Through a close reading of the works of Charlotte Delbo, Margarete Buber-Neumann, Ruth Klüger, and Marguerite Duras, Loew foregrounds these authors’ search for a written form to engage with their experiences of the extreme. Although each chapter contains its individual focus and features, the book possesses a unity in intention, concerns, and consequences. In the theoretical introduction that unites the four chapters, Loew eschews essentialism and revises the emergence of the field of Women and Holocaust studies from the early 1980s on, and signals some of its shortcomings. In response, and in accordance with a recent turn in various disciplines of the Humanities, Loew highlights the ethical dimension of testimony and its responsible commitment to the other. In dealing with the texts as literary testimonies—a complex genre, between literature and history—, testimony is freed from the obligation to respond to the requirements of factual truth, and becomes a privileged form to voice the traumatic event, and to symbolically explore the role of excess.

The Effect Of Pain On Four Aspects Of Working Memory written by Nina Attridge and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with categories.

Background and aims: Pain captures attention, interrupts ongoing tasks, and urges escape and avoidance of harm. Investigations into the effect of pain on working memory have yielded contradictory results, which may be the result of variations in tasks employed to assess working memory (WM). WM is conceptualised as a multicomponent cognitive architectural system that includes distinguishable components such as the processing and storage of visuo-spatial and phonological information. The current study investigated the effects of pain on four WM tasks differing on each of the following dimensions: 1) Input type: phonological/visuo-spatial and 2) Procedure type: processing/storage.Methods: Sixty participants completed the WM tasks (Corsi block and digit span tests, forward and backward versions) in random order with and without pain induced via cold pressor. Results: Our pre-registered analysis, a 2 (pain vs. no pain) x 2 (visuo-spatial vs. phonological) x 2 (processing vs. storage) Within-Subjects ANOVA, revealed that pain did not affect performance on any of the WM tasks. Furthermore, the effect of pain did not differ between input type. Conclusions: Pain did not affect performance on the four WM tasks. The effect observed among chronic pain patients may stem from more than the disruptive effect of pain alone, but rather a combination of psychological, social, and biological factors.

A Crazy Holy Grace written by Frederick Buechner and has been published by Zondervan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-03 with Religion categories.

When pain is real, why is God silent? Frederick Buechner has grappled with the nature of pain, grief, and grace ever since his father committed suicide when Buechner was a young boy. He continued that search as a father when his daughter struggled with anorexia. In this essential collection of essays, including one never before published, Frederick Buechner finds that the God who might seem so silent is ever near. He writes about what it means to be a steward of our pain, and about this grace from God that seems arbitrary and yet draws us to his holiness and care. Finally he writes about the magic of memory and how it can close up the old wounds with the memories of past goodnesses and graces from God. Here now are the best of Buechner’s writings on pain and loss, covering such topics as the power of hidden secrets, loss of a dearly beloved, letting go, resurrection from the ruins, peace, and listening for the quiet voice of God. And he reveals that pain and sorrow can be a treasure—an amazing grace. Buechner says that loss will come to all of us, but he writes that we are not alone. Crazy and unreal as it may sometimes seem, God’s holy, healing grace is always present and available if we are still enough to receive it.
