"One of the most important artists of the twentieth century, Mark Rothko (1903-1970) created a new and impassioned form of abstract painting over the course of his career. Rothko also wrote a number of essays and critical reviews during his lifetime, adding his thoughtful, intelligent, and opinionated voice to the debates of the contemporary art world. Although the artist never published a book of his varied and complex views, his heirs indicate that he occasionally spoke of the existence of such a manuscript to friends and colleagues. Stored in a New York City warehouse since the artist's death more than thirty years ago, this extraordinary manuscript, titled The Artist's Reality, is now being published for the first time. Probably written around 1940-41, this revelatory book discusses Rothko's ideas on the modern art world, art history, myth, beauty, the challenges of being an artist in society, the true nature of "American art," and much more. The Artist's Reality alsoincludes an introduction by Christopher Rothko, the artist's son, who describes the discovery of the manuscript and the complicated and fascinating process of bringing the manuscript to publication. The introduction is illustrated with a small selection of relevant examples of the artist's own work as well as with reproductions of pages from the actual manuscript."--Publisher's website.

"Bedaux brings the discussion of meaning in northern painting back to the basics: the description of real objects, the evocation of everyday associations, the employment of standard visual metaphors, symbols and allegories. With the first publication of an eighteenth-century iconographical program drawn up by the Hague painter Mattheus Verheyden, he demonstrates the continued importance of allegory, that stepchild of iconography." -- Cover page 4.

Nineteenth Century Painting in the Netherlands' fills a gap in art history. There has been no survey on Dutch art since 1948, and the only English publication available is a translation from an earlier 1920s book. This new publication offers a synthesis of research done by many during the last half century and provides new insights into the art market, into stylistic development, and into the relations between Dutch and foreign artists. It also offers over 500 full colour illustrations of paintings: some famous, some hardly known and even some new discoveries. Vincent van Gogh, Joseph Israëls and Anton Mauve are internationally renowned Dutch painters from the 19th century. Their work was collected in Europe and the USA, and of course Van Gogh is perhaps the most famous artist ever. They came from a country famous for its painting since the 16th century. Yet apart from Van Gogh and the Hague School, 19th century Dutch art is for many still unfamiliar territory. This is no surprise, as the last overview dates from 1948, and an earlier book from 1920 was the only one translated in English (in 1973). So it is really high time that another survey is published, as much new research has been done since. Jenny Reynaerts, senior curator of the Rijksmuseum and a well-known specialist on 19th century Dutch art, has written her book for a large reading public. She looks at the period with fresh eyes and often from a contemporary point of view. Her results show that Dutch painters were far more internationally oriented than has been thought until now: Ary Scheffer became a superstar in France, as did Lawrence Alma-Tadema in England, and painters like Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Johan Barthold Jongkind, Jacob and Matthijs Maris made a name for themselves all over Europe. Exhibition: Singer Museum, Laren, The Netherlands (15.01.-15.05.2020).

Myth Ethos And Actuality written by David Castriota and has been published by Univ of Wisconsin Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Architecture categories.

Using material remains, as well as the evidence of contemporary Greek history, rhetoric, and poetry, David Castriota interprets the Athenian monuments as vehicles of an official ideology intended to celebrate and justify the present in terms of the past. Castriota focuses on the strategy of ethical antithesis that asserted Greek moral superiority over the "barbaric" Persians, whose invasion had been repelled a generation earlier. He examines how, in major public programs of painting and sculpture, the leading artists of the period recast the Persians in the guise of wild and impious mythic antagonists to associate them with the ethical flaws or weaknesses commonly ascribed to women, animals, and foreigners. The Athenians, in contrast, were compared to mythic protagonists representing the excellence and triumph of Hellenic culture. Castriota's study is innovative in emphasizing the ethical implication of mythic precedents, which required substantial alterations to render them more effective as archetypes for the defense of Greek culture against a foreign, morally inferior enemy. The book looks in new ways at how the patrons and planners sought to manipulate viewer response through the selective presentation or repackaging of mythic traditions.

The Painter S Methods And Materials written by A. P. Laurie and has been published by Courier Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-21 with Art categories.

Many of the valuable techniques and materials formerly used in painting have been lost or forgotten. With the convenience of the art supply store, the artist is no longer forced to acquaint himself with many of the operations performed by the great craftsmen-painters of the past. The result is that the modern painter often does not understand the chemical and physical reasons for the steps he follows. This book bridges the gap between artist and craftsman, and gives the reader insights into the classical techniques of the great masters as well as the procedures followed today. Professor Laurie has based his book on an intensive study of great master paintings and manuscripts as well as on actual experiment. He covers techniques for painting on wood panels, paper, walls, and canvas, and for dealing with watercolors, tempera, fresco, pigments and colors, balsams, resins, turpentines, varnishes, waxes, sizings, and various oils such as walnuts, linseed, and poppy. The reader will also find much information on the behavior of light through various refractions, prism effect in layers of paint, and the cleaning and preservation of pictures. The discussion is illustrated by 48 full-page plates. These reproductions of actual paintings by major and minor masters — Rembrandt, Lippi, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Rubens, Hals, and others — were selected to show specific points of painting condition or technical procedures. Microphotographs are used to show cross-sections of painting, age cracks, flaking, pigment particles, and similar material.
