Notebook Of Colonial Memories written by Isabela Figueiredo and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05 with Portugal categories.

"Isabela Figueiredo's literary memoir Notebook of Colonial Memories was originally published in Portugal in 2009 as Caderno de Memórias Coloniais. It traces the author's growing up in the 1960s and 70s in Mozambique, which was then still a Portuguese colony, and her "return" at the age of thirteen to Portugal (a country she had never seen) following Mozambique's independence. It offers an uncommonly candid and unsparing perspective on the realities of late Portuguese colonialism in Africa and on the political climate surrounding the "repatriation" to Portugal of hundreds of thousands of former colonial settlers, mainly from Angola and Mozambique. The critical introduction by Anna Klobucka and Phillip Rothwell describes these historical circumstances and contextualizes Figueiredo's text for the English-language reader, as well as commenting on the writer's complex exercise of remembrance, reconstruction and fictionalization of her experience in both Mozambique and Portugal. Keywords: Portuguese colonialism, Mozambique, decolonization, postcolonialism, memoir" --

[ENG] Taking as a starting point the textual reading of Primeiras Estórias, by Guimarães Rosa, this study shows the fictional project of composing Landscapes of Memory, configuring them on theoretical notions of critical-literary and philosophical nature. Such notions allow transgression of space and time, as long as they shed light on the desire to «transcendence» named by the author, in a letter to one of his translators. Therefore, this study examines the effectiveness of the reflection by the critic Michel Collot, represented mainly through the image of «landscape-thought» and of the reflection by the philosopher François Jullien, articulated by the «silent changes» while productive mediations for understanding the desire to cross geographical and subjective boundaries are set. It is just this gesture of crossing and its impact on another spatiality and temporality that merge certain interval landscape translated exemplarily by memory landscapes. The approach of this collecction of short stories by the focus of constant narrative shifts accomplished, belonging to various fields, not only allows you to configure Primeiras Estó rias as the grain of Guimarães Rosa’s voice, renewing the Brazilian fictional canon, but it makes it possible to define the dialogue that Guimarães seeks to establish with the World Literature: landscapes of Memory, thus, as the matrix of this double articulation. Key words: Space; Time; Landscape; Memory; Transformation.

Dynamics Of The Pantanal Wetland In South America written by Ivan Bergier and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-30 with Science categories.

This book provides readers with in-depth insights into the changes in the Pantanal wetland from its formation to the actual and likely future states. It reveals that today’s Pantanal is an evolutionary consequence of geological, ecological and, more recently, man-made events taking place at distinct space-time intervals. Topics include geotectonics and sun-earth interactions, which largely dictate the rate of drastic changes that eventually disrupt ecological stability and radically rebuild the regional landscape. Furthermore, the biota-climate system is discussed as a major driver reshaping the ecohydrology functioning of the landscape on an intermediate timescale. Also covered are major changes in the landscape ecohydrology and biodiversity due to recent land-use and climate changes induced by humankind in the Anthropocene. The ability to recognize how those temporal scales impact the Pantanal wetland provides the opportunity for wise management approaches and the sustainable development of the region.

Blood And Borders written by Walter A. Kemp and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Conflict management categories.

Inter-ethnic conflict and genocide have demonstrated the dangers of failing to protect people targeted by fellow citizens. When minority groups in one country are targeted for killings or ethnic cleansing based on their group identity, whose responsibility is it to protect them? In particular, are they owed any protective responsibility by their kin state? How can cross-border kinship ties strengthen greater pan-national identity across borders without challenging territorially defined national security? As shown by the Russia-Georgia conflict over South Ossetia, unilateral intervention by a kin state can lead to conflict within and between states. The protection of national minorities should not be used as an excuse to violate state sovereignty and generate inter-state conflict. This book suggests that an answer to the kin state dilemma might come from the formula "neither intervention nor indifference" that recognizes the special bonds but proscribes armed intervention based on the ties of kinship.--Publisher's description.

This open access volume provides for the first time a comprehensive description and scientific evaluation of underwater archaeological finds referring to human occupation of the continental shelf around the coastlines of Europe and the Mediterranean when sea levels were lower than present. These are the largest body of underwater finds worldwide, amounting to over 2500 find spots, ranging from individual stone tools to underwater villages with unique conditions of preservation. The material reviewed here ranges in date from the Lower Palaeolithic period to the Bronze Age and covers 20 countries bordering all the major marine basins from the Atlantic coasts of Ireland and Norway to the Black Sea, and from the western Baltic to the eastern Mediterranean. The finds from each country are presented in their archaeological context, with information on the history of discovery, conditions of preservation and visibility, their relationship to regional changes in sea-level and coastal geomorphology, and the institutional arrangements for their investigation and protection. Editorial introductions summarise the findings from each of the major marine basins. There is also a final section with extensive discussion of the historical background and the legal and regulatory frameworks that inform the management of the underwater cultural heritage and collaboration between offshore industries, archaeologists and government agencies. The volume is based on the work of COST Action TD0902 SPLASHCOS, a multi-disciplinary and multi-national research network supported by the EU-funded COST organisation (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). The primary readership is research and professional archaeologists, marine and Quaternary scientists, cultural-heritage managers, commercial and governmental organisations, policy makers, and all those with an interest in the sea floor of the continental shelf and the human impact of changes in climate, sea-level and coastal geomorphology.

Cork Oak Woodlands On The Edge written by James Aronson and has been published by Island Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-26 with Nature categories.

Cork oak has historically been an important species in the western Mediterranean—ecologically as a canopy or “framework” tree in natural woodlands, and culturally as an economically valuable resource that underpins local economies. Both the natural woodlands and the derived cultural systems are experiencing rapid change, and whether or not they are resilient enough to adapt to that change is an open question. Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge provides a synthesis of the most up-to-date, scientific, and practical information on the management of cork oak woodlands and the cultural systems that depend on cork oak. In addition, Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge offers ten site profiles written by local experts that present an in-depth vision of cork oak woodlands across a range of biophysical, historical, and cultural contexts, with sixteen pages of full-color photos that illustrate the tree, agro-silvopastoral systems, products, resident biodiversity, and more. Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge is an important book for anyone interested in the future of cork oak woodlands, or in the management of cultural landscapes and their associated land-use systems. In a changing world full of risks and surprises, it represents an excellent example of a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to studying, managing, and restoring an ecosystem, and will serve as a guide for other studies of this kind.
