En 1955, apareció póstumamente, bajo el cuidado editorial de Raúl Porras Barrenechea, probablemente el libro de José de la Riva-Agüero (Lima, 1885-1944) más querido por sus lectores: Paisajes peruanos. Ocho ediciones, entre 1955 y 2012, todas basadas en la prínceps de Porras, dan testimonio de ello. Riva-Agüero escribió Paisajes entre 1916 y 1917 a partir de las libretas de notas con que registró sus impresiones de un viaje que hizo por la Sierra peruana en 1912. Como la de Porras, la presente edición se basa en los originales mecanografiados y corregidos que Riva-Agüero reunió en 1931, luego de su largo autoexilio europeo. A diferencia de la de Porras, se consignan en el aparato crítico todas las variantes encontradas, tanto en el manuscrito como en las publicaciones periódicas con las que Riva-Agüero colaboró entre 1916 y 1952. Las notas buscan facilitar la comprensión al lector interesado y el estudio introductorio, dar cuenta de la dimensión textual de un relato de viajes polifónico que aspira a descubrir el carácter del Perú en su geografía y a partir de ella, en su historia, como lo prueban tanto el cronotopo del camino, verdadero artificio organizador del libro, como los encendidos ensayos.

Este libro pretende dar una visión de conjunto sobre los diversos problemas que, desde la Edad Media, planteó la introducción de los cultismos en nuestra lengua. La primera parte, que analiza la incorporación de los helenismos y latinismos al español desde un punto de vista diacrónico, discute asimismo la aportación de los autores más importantes a este respecto y trata de fijar las principales características de cada período. Siguen tres apartados, dedicados al uso coloquial de las expresiones y vocablos grecolatinos, a los cultismos importados y al influjo que ejerció el romance sobre esos términos, respectivamente. La segunda parte, consagrada a la grafía, estudia cómo fueron transcritas las letras del alfabeto latino que no tenían correspondencia en castellano. La parte tercera tiene por objeto la evolución de la morfología de los cultismos castellanos a partir de su formación originaria. La cuarta y última parte atiende a las complejas cuestiones prosódicas que originó la integración de los cultismos en una lengua que no era la suya. Esta monografía, que solo pretende incitar a adentrarse en este campo a los estudiosos de nuestra lengua, puede servir de ayuda a los hispanistas y, sobre todo, a los editores de los textos medievales y renacentistas.
