El estudio de los paisajes antiguos relacionados con la explotación de los recursos mineros forma parte de una línea de investigación consolidada que está produciendo importantes resultados para un conocimiento más global de los procesos económicos y sociales desencadenados por esta actividad. The debasement of coinage, particularly of silver, was a common feature of pre-modern monetary systems. Most coinages were issued by state authorities and the condition of a coinage is often seen (rightly or wrongly) as an indicator of the broader fiscal health of the state that produced it. While in some cases the motives behind the debasements or reductions in standards are clear, in many cases the intentions of the issuing authorities are uncertain. Various explanations have been advanced: fiscal motives (such as a desire to profit or a to cover a deficit caused by the failure to balance expenditure and revenues); monetary motives (such as changing demand for coined money or a desire to maintain monetary stability in the face of changing values of raw materials or labour costs); pressure from groups within society that would profit from debasement; misconduct at the mint; or the decline of existing monetary standards due to circulation and wear of the coinage in circulation. Certain explanations have tended to gain favour with monetary historians of specific periods, partly reflecting the compartmentalization of scholarship. Thus the study of Roman debasements emphasizes fiscal deficits, whereas medievalists are often more prepared to consider monetary factors as contributing to debasements. To some extent these different approaches are a reflection of discrepancies in the amount of documentary evidence available for the respective periods, but the divide also underlines fundamentally different approaches to the function of coinage: Romanists have preferred to see coins as a medium for state payments; whereas medievalists have often emphasized exchange as an important function of currency. The volume is inter-disciplinary in scope. Apart from bringing together monetary historians of different periods, it also contains contributions from archaeometallurgists who have experience with the chemical and physical composition of coins and technical aspects of production of base alloys

Bi- and multilingualism are of great interest for contemporary linguists since this phenomenon deeply reflects on language acquisition, language use, and sociolinguistic conditions in many different circumstances all over the world. Multilingualism was, however, certainly rather common already, if not especially, in the premodern world. For some time now, research has started to explore this issue through a number of specialized studies. The present volume continues with the investigation of multilingualism through a collection of case studies focusing on important examples in medieval and early modern societies, that is, in linguistic and cultural contact zones, such as England, Spain, the Holy Land, but also the New World. As all contributors confirm, the numerous cases of multilingualism discussed here indicate strongly that the premodern period knew considerably less barriers between people of different social classes, cultural background, and religious orientation. But we also have to acknowledge that already then human communication could fail because of linguistic hurdles which prevented mutual understanding in religious and cultural terms.

A causa de su llamativo color rojo, el cinabrio o sulfuro de mercurio se empleó en diferentes contextos junto con otros pigmentos rojos desde etapas remontables al inicio de la Prehistoria Reciente. La aplicación de técnicas físico-químicas ha posibilitado su reconocimiento y, a partir de él, una lectura comparativa de su presencia en relación con la de otros pigmentos rojos tan abundantes en la naturaleza como las hematites, o su interacción con otros productos y materiales considerados de prestigio, abriendo interesantes interrogantes que iluminan lecturas en clave social, económica e ideológica. En época histórica, el conocimiento de su empleo, mucho tiempo dependiente de las referencias de los autores clásicos, se ve ahora enriquecido por los resultados de la aplicación de técnicas analíticas que, no sólo certifican su empleo en la pintura mural ilustrando su aplicación pura o con mezcla o las posibles causas de deterioro, sino también su uso en la amalgamación de metales nobles. Un salto cualitativo importante en las investigaciones sobre el uso antiguo del cinabrio está representado por la capacidad de identificar las fuentes de origen del mineral mediante la aplicación de diversas técnicas arqueométricas, lo que añade conocimiento sobre el inicio de la explotación de estos recursos en el mayor foco mundial, localizado en la comarca de Almadén, pero también en otras regiones hispanas. Esta obra ofrece un estado de la cuestión sobre las aplicaciones del cinabrio en diversos contextos de la Antigüedad peninsular alumbrado por las investigaciones de los más reconocidos expertos en la cuestión, pero integra también un conjunto de trabajos sobre el propio mineral, redactado por prestigiosos especialistas de la geología y minería del cinabrio. Esta relación interdisciplinar contribuye a configurar el ambiente en que deben integrarse los estudios sobre la explotación histórica de este elemento icónico de la minería hispana.

Las minas de Riotinto fueron en la antigüedad uno de los mayores complejos industriales de producción metálica. De esa producción queda aún hoy el testimonio de sus escoriales, que hasta hace pocos años no han sido valorados e investigados con metodología arqueológica. Los trabajos de minería para la producción de concentrado de cobre que hoy se llevan a cabo por parte de Atalaya Mining en este importante coto minero, están brindando la oportunidad de excavar y muestrear algunos de estos escoriales romanos. Una prueba de las posibilidades que ofrecen los escoriales antiguos para el estudio de la historia y economía de época romana ha sido la excavación llevada acabo en uno de esos sectores de escoriales de Riotinto, el catalogado como 6B. Su estudio demuestra que estuvo relacionado con la producción de plata, el metal de referencia en la producción de Riotinto en época romana, y la documentación de su sencilla estratigrafía, en la que se incluyen algunos materiales cerámicos y una ocultación monetal, permiten ajustar su cronología. En ese escorial se encuentra representada la etapa de esplendor de la explotación de las masas polimetálicas de Riotinto por Roma, datada a fines del siglo I d.C. y siglo II d.C., en tiempo de las dinastías flavia y antonina.

La diffusion de ce métal est connue par les très nombreux lingots découverts, pour la plupart — et plus spécialement au cours des dernières décennies — dans des épaves sous-marines. Porteurs d’une riche épigraphie, ils constituent une inépuisable source d’information sur l’organisation de l’activité minière dans l’Hispanie et sur le commerce au long cours du plomb qu’elle produisait. Cet ouvrage réunit toute l’épigraphie de ces lingots (marques de producteurs, cachets de commerce et autres graffiti) ; chaque inscription y est classée selon sa catégorie, étudiée et commentée. La synthèse de ces données constitue l’état le plus actuel des connaissances sur les deux plus grands secteurs miniers producteurs de plomb et d’argent de l’Hispanie romaine, celui de Carthagène et celui de Sierra Morena, dans une réflexion où se croisent les données de la géologie, de l’archéologie et de l’épigraphie, mais aussi de l’archéométrie, à laquelle est faite une large place, avec de nombreuses et inédites analyses isotopiques du plomb. Cerro Muriano is a small population centre situated 16 km to the north of the city of Córdoba, between the municipalities of Córdoba and Obejo (Andalusia, Spain). This territory is situated over a large field of copper veins, which has been exploited by the different peoples and societies that have populated Córdoba's mountain range Sierra Morena. The mining and metallurgy of this red metal have been used to track the evolution of this site over time. This has produced much archaeological evidence, ranging from the Copper Age to the 20th century. From 1897 to 1919, the mines of Cerro Muriano were worked -with the new technologies brought by industrialisation- by four different, but closely related, English companies. These companies generated a complete mining settlement; a plant of considerable dimensions for washing and concentrating the minerals, calcining them, smelting them, and finally converting the matte into blister copper; and a populated complex of various neighbourhoods composed of houses, shacks and barracks. In addition, there was other infrastructure required to sustain a society (e.g., a school, canteen, theatre, church, hospital, etc.), buildings for work (e.g., offices and a laboratory), and other spaces for production, storage, and distribution. It was specifically the train that connected the city of Córdoba with the coal-mining area of Peñarroya-Belmez-Espiel which permitted the English to set up their business in a mountainous location. However, at the end of the 19th century, the train did not stop at Cerro Muriano; in fact, there was nothing to motivate the construction of a train station there: neither a consolidated population nor any important economic activity. Thus, one of the primary objectives of the initial English capitalinvestment was to bring the rail line to its properties. Therefore, mining and railways marked the origin of Cerro Muriano as we know it today. This study case of Cerro Muriano during the English period found that it was a faithful reflection of its time. Spanish mining in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was heavily influenced by the involvement of foreign companies. This should not be seen as a distinctive feature of Spain as a whole, but rather as the result of an international situation in which mining underwent a kind of premature globalisation. It may be argued that the British Cerro Muriano was a standard product. In it, we can discern many of the features typical of the international expansion and industrialisation of mining and metallurgy operations: the key introduction of new technology in the exploitation of the mine, the fundamental importance of the railway, the eclectic nature of the whole in terms of the technology employed, and the creation of a mining village, in the town- planning and social senses. In short, Cerro Muriano is a good example of economically-colonialist mining activity that seems to show that the highly topical subject of globalization is not a new phenomenon, since the evolution of technology and the spread use of the same machines on an international scale -among other circumstances- facilitated the homogenization of the world we inhabit today.
