Reporting from the heartland of Yugoslavia in the 1970s, Washington Post correspondent Dusko Doder described "a landscape of Gothic spires, Islamic mosques, and Byzantine domes." A quarter century later, this landscape lay in ruins. In addition to claiming tens of thousands of lives, the former Yugoslavia's four wars ravaged over a thousand religious buildings, many purposefully destroyed by Serbs, Albanians, and Croats alike, providing an apt architectural metaphor for the region's recent history. Rarely has the human impulse toward monocausality--the need for a single explanation--been in greater evidence than in Western attempts to make sense of the country's bloody dissolution. From Robert Kaplan's controversial Balkan Ghosts, which identified entrenched ethnic hatreds as the driving force behind Yugoslavia's demise to NATO's dogged pursuit and arrest of Slobodan Milosevic, the quest for easy answers has frequently served to obscure the Balkans' complex history. Perhaps most surprisingly, no book has focused explicitly on the role religion has played in the conflicts that continue to torment southeastern Europe. Based on a wide range of South Slav sources and previously unpublished, often confidential documents from communist state archives, as well as on the author's own on-the-ground experience, Balkan Idols explores the political role and influence of Serbian Orthodox, Croatian Catholic, and Yugoslav Muslim religious organizations over the course of the last century. Vjekoslav Perica emphatically rejects the notion that a "clash of civilizations" has played a central role in fomenting aggression. He finds no compelling evidence of an upsurge in religious fervor among the general population. Rather, he concludes, the primary religious players in the conflicts have been activist clergy. This activism, Perica argues, allowed the clergy to assume political power without the accountablity faced by democratically-elected officials. What emerges from Perica's account is a deeply nuanced understanding of the history and troubled future of one of Europes most volatile regions.

Analyzing informal trading practices and smuggling through the case study of Novi Pazar, this book explores how societies cope when governments no longer assume the responsibility for providing welfare to their citizens. How do economic transnational practices shape one’s sense of belonging in times of crisis/precarity? Specifically, how does the collapse of the Ottoman Empire – and the subsequent migration of the Muslim Slav population to Turkey – relate to the Yugoslav Succession Wars during the 1990s? Using the case study of Novi Pazar, a town in Serbia that straddles the borders of Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo that became a smuggling hub during the Yugoslav conflict, the book focuses on that informal market economy as a prism through which to analyze the strengthening of existing relations between the émigré community in Turkey and the local Bosniak population in the Sandžak region. Objavljen 1924. godine, Vrtlog se smatra Riverinim remek-delom i klasikom kolumbijske i latinoameričke književnosti. Roman govori o nasilju i eksploatisanju svih etničkih grupa i rasa oba pola (Indijanaca, žena, crnaca, belaca, dece, mestika, mulata) po amazonskoj prašumi usled kaučuk-groznice krajem 19. i početkom 20. veka. Glavni junak i pripovedač je Arturo Kova, siromašni pesnik i ženskaroš, koji beži iz rodnog mesta sa svojom ljubavnicom Alisijom, odbeglom nesuđenom nevestom bogatog matorog zemljoposednika. Piščev stil otkriva uticaj i romantizma i modernizma, a struktura romana je mozaična i prepliću se epizode sa živopisnim likovima, prikazi prirode kolumbijsko-venecuelanskih ljanosa (savane visoke trave) i amazonske džungle, njihov uticaj na narav ljudi, težak život radnika u šumama kaučuka i neuspele romanse. U romanu se prepliću fikcija i stvarnost, hronika, novinarstvo i književnost. Kao u Don Kihotu (navodno zasnovanom na rukopisu Sida Hameta Benengelija), kao osnova za Vrtlog poslužio je rukopis Artura Kove. Ličnost A. Kove postoji u istorijskim spisima, i on je opisan kao čovek koji se bavio eksploatacijom kaučuka. U prvim izdanjima romana čak se pojavljuju fotografije A. Kove i Klementea Silve. Mnogi likovi su zasnovani na stvarnim ličnostima.
