This book traces the evolution of the Spanish language from pre-Roman days to the present and stresses the influence of social and political events on its development. After a short discussion of the Indo-European tongues, Spaulding reviews the effects on Spanish of the languages of the pre-Roiman invaders, the Visigoths and other Germanic tribes, and the Arabs. La unidad de pensamiento y lenguaje hace imposible disociarlos en la mente, amén, de pasarnos desapercibida la fealdad de nuestra propia lengua, cuyo vocabulario ha sido elaborado conforme a la arbitrariedad y funcionalidad requeridas al signo. Acaso por ello, la lingüística, sintaxis, morfología, semántica, fonología, lexicología, etimología y demás áreas colindantes, no se han ocupado del asunto. Y sin embargo, todos hemos tenido experiencia de sentir placer ante una palabra bella. Pero ¿Qué hace bella a una palabra? Esta es la incógnita a despejar en este ensayo camuflado de diccionario donde el autor presenta su edderología: la nueva ciencia del lenguaje que estudia la belleza de las palabras. La obra, dividida en siete partes, da inicio con la presentación social de la nueva ciencia: su génesis, necesidad, objeto de estudio, potenciales aplicaciones, etc. Acto seguido, pasa a exponer la metodología empleada para la confección del diccionario como la comparación de palabras, la sustitución de fonemas, la conmutación de grafemas...Alcanzada la tercera parte, se citan los más destacados motivos de belleza lingüística como son los acordes consonánticos, alianzas vocálicas, trabas, interrupciones, duplicidades, esdrujulidad...Es en la parte cuarta cuando se presentan los grafemas y fonemas al detalle explicitando sus cualidades grafológicas, fonéticas, neurolingüísticas, caligramáticas y sinestésicas. Llegados aquí, en la parte quinta se destila el cuerpo léxico del diccionario, cuyas setenta y siete entradas, obviamente, no pretenden agotar las candidatas merecedoras de ser incorporadas a un Diccionario de Bellas Palabras, sino proporcionar la pauta a seguir en su recepción. Con intención contraria, le sigue una sexta parte donde se muestran casos de significantes entrañables, simpáticos, brillantes, con gracia...que, empero, no han sido aceptados como bellos, ofreciéndose las razones de esta decisión. Por último, hay una parte séptima en forma de cuestionario edderológico donde, cada cual, podrá corroborar el grado de acierto vertido en sus páginas diseminado entre las bellas voces almizcle, brizna, colibrí, dintel, emir, filial, gárgola, hojarasca, iglú, jazmín, koala, lapislázuli, llovizna, malabar, nenúfar, oliva, periplo, risco, sutil, timbal, usufructo, válvula, whisky, yogur, zascandil...con las que se pretende ilustrar para nuestro deleite intelectual, el curioso caudal de su contenido.
