The concentric lines of growth occurring on the outer surface were totally absent on the inner surface, which is explained by supposing the apposition at the margin to stop for some time; the formation of new layers at the whole under surface at the same time continuing. The chief result of the investigation of the oodywall (with its pallial lobes) on surfaceviews and sections was the demonstration of the non-existence of lacanary system described by Hancock. Under the simple epiblastic epithelial layer was found a homogeneous intercellular substance, containing a reticular network of multipolar cells, a 'mesenchymatic' layer. These cells had probably been mistaken by Hancock for a system of lacunary spaces. At the side of the c lomic cavity the body-wall shows a layer of fiat epithelial cells." 1 ' Journal de Conchyliologie, ' tome viii, p. 49, 1860. 2 ' Paleontologie Francaise, Brachiopodes Juraasiqnes, ' t. vi, pp. 17, 18, 1. 1111, 1862. 3 ' Annals and Mag. of Nat. Hist., ' 5th series, vol. ii, p. 379, 1883. I must, however, remark that Hancock's lacun have been seen by Mr. Dall in some species, while in others they are invisible and apparently absent; and he adds that this is even true in some individuals of a single species. Having briefiy alluded to the exterior of the shell, as well as to its structure, it will be now necessary to notice its interior surface; but to this subject we shall have to refer more fully in the sequel. Mr. P. H. Carpenter remarked when receiving the Lyell Fund Q. J. Geol. Socents., ' vol. xxxix, Proc., p. 35)-" I have the stronges

Miller in his valuable Catalogue of the Genera and Species of the American Palaeozoic Fossils (1877), namely, that Triplesia is a synonym of Camarella, nor can I admit that the numerous species he classes under Camarella all belong to that genus. Neither Hall nor Billings has sufficiently defined the characters of the genera they have established, nor have they described the internal characters; thus much confusion has prevailed with respect to their true generic value. Triplesia does not appear to have had spiral supports for the labial appendages. In my ' Silurian Monograph ' I followed M'Coy, Phillips, Salter, and others, while erroneously describing the T01." insularis of Eichwald as a species of Orlliis. Since then, the finding of well-preserved internal casts and isolated valves enables me to refer that species to Hall's Trz'plesz'a. Thanks to the kindness of Mr. Whitfield, I have also been able to examine typical examples of T. ewfans and T. Ortoni. The cardinal process in the last-named form is very remarkable. It is more or less developed in different species of the genus. 'In T. Ortoml it is unusually large, measuring about one third of the length of the dorsal valve; it is much thickened and rounded at and near its base (a), with a projection at each of its lateral extremities (6); the stem of the process (0) is nearly cylindrical, about a line and a half in length, when it bifurcates and forms:1' "lV;__ 11., -_;, -, O, ., m-, eek' W two smaller diverging branches, each of which ni_easures 1'D'"'l"l_"@=...

Not illustrated. 1862 edition. Excerpt: ... in the former part of this monograph, forms an additional proof, in the absence of all other anomurous characters, that Leach was not " deceived " when he referred the genus to the family Corystidaa, a view which is confirmed by the structure of the external footjaws and the form of the oral opening. It is remarkable that the species of this genus are very subject to be infested by a parasite, probably nearly allied to Bopyrus, which occasions a large swelling on the branchial region, and doubtless occupied the branchial cavity. This is precisely the situation in which Bop_1/rue is found in several recent species of the Palwmonidae and their allies, but I do not remember to have seen the same circumstance in any of the existing Brachyura. I have figured a specimen thus infested in Plate III, fig. 3. Two species of this genus have been found on the Continent, both of which are specifically distinct from the British ones. One of these, Notopocorystes Mqlleri of Count von Binkhorst, considerably resembles Palreacorystes Broderipii, and is from the Maestricht beds. The second is P. Frigeri of Professor Milne Edwards, which has many characters in common with that species, but is undoubtedly distinct. Eumorphocorystes sculplus of the former author has the peculiar sculpture on the carapace which distinguishes Eucorystes Carteri, but in the former the sculpture extends over the whole carapace, whilst in the latter it is confined to the anterior half.
