Excerpt from Palaestra Vitae: Eine Neue Aufgabe des Altklassischen Unterrichtes Als ich in der ersten Halfte der neunziger Jahre in Vor lesungen an der Universitat Kiel die Aufgaben des philo logischen Unterrichtes wiederholt behandelte, da gliederte sich der Stoff, von einer historischen Einleitung abgesehen, natur gemafs in drei Hauptabschnitte: Lekture, Grammatik, Realien. Aus den beiden ersten sind "die Kunst des Ubersetzens (z. Aufl. 1896) und Grammatica militans (1898) hervorgegangen, Schriften, die in den Kreisen der Berufsgenossen freundliche Aufnahme gefunden haben, auch von reiferen Schulern mehr fach mit Erfolg benutzt worden sind. Von dem Inhalte des dritten Abschnittes gab dann die Abhandlung eine Probe, die Ostern 1900 den Jahresbericht fur das Stadtische Gymnasium und Realgymnasium zu Dusseldorf begleitete: "wie dient das Gymnasium dem Leben? Ein Beitrag zu den Aufgaben prak tischer Geistesbildung. Dieses Programm, das noch vielfach verlangt wird, wahrend die davon hergestellten Exemplare seit langerer Zeit vergriffen sind, ist in das vorliegende kleine Buch in der Weise aufgegangen, dafs eine Reihe von Kapiteln hinzu gefugt, die alteren an vielen Stellen erweitert wurden, so dafs im ganzen mehr als die Halfte des gegenwartigen Textes neu ist. Dabei ist naturlich, was inzwischen teils fremde teils eigene wissenschaftliche Arbeit an Ergebnissen und neuen Gesichtspunkten, was die fortgesetzte Praxis des Unterrichtes an erganzenden und berichtigenden Erfahrungen gebracht hat, nach Kraften verwertet worden.
