Las instituciones bancarias se cuentan hoy entre los coleccionistas de arte más significativos de nuestro tiempo. Este coleccionismo asume la coexistencia de varios gustos individuales y cambiantes. Estas colecciones se inician con los testimonios inmediatos de los que las fundaron y dirigieron a lo largo de su historia, que se une a la misma condición bancaria. Proceden de la voluntad de su consejo de administración con una intención decorativa para buscar una mayor dignidad y calidad de sus sedes. Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX, algunas de estas instituciones iniciaron la labor pionera de comprar arte con intención de formar una colección. Estas iniciativas estuvieron ligadas a determinadas personalidades, como ocurrió con Manuel Arburúa de la Miyar en el Banco Exterior de España y Juan Lladó Sánchez-Blanco en el Banco Urquijo. Dotaron a sus sedes centrales y regionales de grandes obras de arte en un momento en que el estado, la sociedad y los medios de comunicación vivían al margen de la creación artística. Este mecenazgo se incrementó a partir de 1977, con motivo de la liberalización del sistema fnanciero español, al poder operar los bancos sin restricciones a lo largo y ancho de la geografia española. Entre 1973 y 1983 se triplicó el número de oficinas bancarias. Fue un momento en que urgía decorarlas. A lo largo de este trabajo apreciamos cómo las colecciones de arte de estas instituciones bancarias no sólo han contribuido a incrementar y preservar el patrimonio artístico de nuestro país, también actuaron en calidad de mecenas de muchos artistas.

The purpose of this book is to develop a generative theory of shape that has two properties we regard as fundamental to intelligence –(1) maximization of transfer: whenever possible, new structure should be described as the transfer of existing structure; and (2) maximization of recoverability: the generative operations in the theory must allow maximal inferentiability from data sets. We shall show that, if generativity satis?es these two basic criteria of - telligence, then it has a powerful mathematical structure and considerable applicability to the computational disciplines. The requirement of intelligence is particularly important in the gene- tion of complex shape. There are plenty of theories of shape that make the generation of complex shape unintelligible. However, our theory takes the opposite direction: we are concerned with the conversion of complexity into understandability. In this, we will develop a mathematical theory of und- standability. The issue of understandability comes down to the two basic principles of intelligence - maximization of transfer and maximization of recoverability. We shall show how to formulate these conditions group-theoretically. (1) Ma- mization of transfer will be formulated in terms of wreath products. Wreath products are groups in which there is an upper subgroup (which we will call a control group) that transfers a lower subgroup (which we will call a ?ber group) onto copies of itself. (2) maximization of recoverability is insured when the control group is symmetry-breaking with respect to the ?ber group.
