Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas (1925–1929) is a prescient work of mixed media assemblage, made up of hundreds of images culled from antiquity to the Renaissance and arranged into startling juxtapositions. When we talk about the geographical, ecological, ethnographic, historical, documentary, and cosmopolitan “turns” in relation to the work of practitioners of contempory art, what exactly do we mean? Are we talking about a “reading strategy”? About an interpretive model, as would be derived from the linguistic turn of the 1970s, or rather about a stratigraphic structure that could be read across multiple cultural practices? Do we wish to read one system by means of another system, in a way that one nurtures the other so that it can open us up to other forms of being? Or is it rather about a generative movement in which a new horizon emerges in the process, leaving behind the practice that was its point of departure? The recurrence of “turn” in place of “style”, “-ism”, or “tendency” would ultimately respond to a clear urgency of the contemporary global world: a movement characterised by aesthetic pluralism, by the simultaneousness of various modi operandi, and by a great multiplicity of languages that constantly change their state while having many features in common. And “turn” would also allow within the space of the contemporary — of here and now —, a great diversity of stories from all around the world that should be confronted simultaneously in an intellectual outlook that is continuous and disjunctive, essential to understanding the present as a whole.

El presente libro ofrece una reflexión sobre el arte a través de sus «derivas», es decir, los movimientos que anidan en la creación y que hacen que en el arte actual quepan todas las maneras. A lo largo de sus capítulos no sólo se considera la creación propiamente dicha sino también la disciplina de la Historia del arte, sus límites y la necesidad de plantear nuevos métodos y estrategias de lectura. Y ello a partir de un modo de entender el conocimiento a través de intercambios de saberes entre disciplinas –afines o no–, en lugar de querer encapsularlo en un único y delimitado campo. Son estos saberes reticulares los que explican las mencionadas «derivas», que, partiendo de un núcleo central que podría resumirse en un análisis de la teoría y la historia del arte global de las dos últimas décadas, se diversifican en múltiples visiones no jerárquicas que dan cuenta de los contextos en los que se generan y operan. En definitiva, este texto desarrolla una serie de «líneas de fuga» que, desde la crítica de arte, los Estudios Visuales, el concepto de archivo o el de globalización, tanto convergen como divergen buscando un movimiento continuo y, en último término, generan un espacio común desde el que reconocer que tanto o más importante que el arte que nuestro momento global concibe, lo es la manera de analizarlo, de narrarlo, de comunicarlo y de hacerlo extensible a una audiencia activa y participativa.

The iconoclasm that occurred during the Spanish Civil War (1936–39) went down in the history of the destruction of religious images as an extraordinary tragedy. Impoverished masses, anarchists, and socialists fought desperately against right-wing members of the Catholic Church. Since 1999, the Spanish artist Pedro G. Romero (*1964 in Aracena, Huelva) has been assembling traces of this period in an archive comprising more than one thousand historical images, texts, and sound recordings that he compares with the avant-garde and contemporary stances of artists and theorists, such as Hugo Ball, Emmy Hennings, Joseph Beuys, and Alexander Kluge. The 'Archivo F.X.' is presented in constantly new forms with the aid of multimedia objects, complex exhibition choreographies, and thematic publications. The present volume is part of and testimony to the staging of the project at the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart in 2012
