Many books have dealt with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the Israeli perspective. However, few reflect the Palestinian point of view. Letters from Palestine offers an American audience a rare opportunity to listen to actual Palestinian people as they describe what it is like to live in the occupied territories of the West Bank or Gaza, or to grow up as a Palestinian in the U.S. Their accounts are lively, poignant, searing, and tragic, yet often laced with touches of surreal humor. By showing Palestinians in all their humanity, Letters from Palestine enables American readers to see beyond the usual stereotypes. About the Authors Kenneth Ring, PhD, is professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Connecticut. He has published five other books. Letters from Palestine is his first book on Palestinian issues, though he has written articles about contemporary events in Palestine. Ghassan Abdullah studied mathematics and computing in England and lived in Syria, Lebanon, Italy, and Jordan before moving to Palestine in 1994. He worked at Birzeit University for nearly a decade. Ghassan is currently active in several Palestinian civil society NGOs concerned with heritage, human rights, development, and the arts. Endorsements "The letters in this book will break your heart and they will make you laugh. I am excited to invite others to learn from them as I have. It is my hope that these Palestinian voices will inspire you, as they have inspired me, to believe that a peaceful and just future in Palestine is not only essential, but indeed possible." --Anna Baltzer, author of Witness in Palestine "[A] powerful testimony to collective heartbreak and pain, but also a story of continued Palestinian determination and the endurance of their quest for justice." --Kathy Christison, author of Palestine in Pieces "Letters from Palestine is searching and powerful, remarkable and daring. It's a serious attempt at understanding what the media has missed, deliberately or otherwise, for many years. It must be read and recounted for years to come." --Ramzy Baroud, author of My Father Was a Freedom Fighter

Unequal Conflict written by John Gee and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Arab-Israeli conflict categories.

The survival of the state of Israel has often been viewed as a victory against the odds. Looking back on over half a century of conflict, the Palestinians view matters very differently. In this history of the Arab-Israeli struggle, John Gee returns to the root of the conflict: the creation of the state of Israel. Although critical of Israel, Gee demonstrates that Zionism created a society within Palestine well adapted to win the struggle with the indigenous population. The Palestinians were ill-equipped to meet the challenge, their ability to resist impaired by social factors and, crucially, a reluctance to recognise the strengths and achievements of the Israelis.

Palestinians In Jerusalem And Jaffa 1948 written by Itamar Radai and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-14 with History categories.

Between November 1947 and May 1948 war between the Palestinian Arab community and the Jewish community encompassed Palestine, with Jerusalem and Jaffa becoming focal points in the conflict due to their centrality, size and symbolic importance. Palestinians in Jerusalem and Jaffa, 1948 examines Palestinian Arab society, institutions, and fighters in Jerusalem and Jaffa during the conflict. It is one of the first books in English that deals with the Palestinian Arabs at this crucial and tragic moment in their history, with extensive use of Arabic sources and an inquiry from the Palestinian vantage point. It examines the causes of the social collapse of the Palestinian Arab communities in Jerusalem and Jaffa during the 1948 inter-communal war, and the impact of this collapse on the military defeat. This book reveals that the most important internal factors to the Palestinian defeat were the social changes that took place in Arab society during the British Mandate, namely internal migration from rural areas to the cities, the shift from agriculture to wage labour, and the rise of the urban middle class. By looking beyond the well-established external factors, this study uncovers how modernity led to a breakdown within Palestinian Arab society, widening social fissures without producing effective institutions, and thus alienating social classes both from each other and from the leadership. With careful examination of a range of sources and informed analysis of Palestinian social history, Palestinians in Jerusalem and Jaffa, 1948 is a key resource for students and scholars interested in the modern Middle East, Palestinian Studies, the Arab-Israeli conflict and Israel Studies.

As the Israel-Palestine conflict rages on, it is more important now than ever to understand the history of the Palestinian people. Rosemary Sayigh's The Palestinians is a classic of radical history. Through extensive interviews with Palestinians in refugee camps, she provides a deeply-moving, grassroots story of how the Palestinians came to be who they are today. In their own voices, Palestinians tell stories of the Nabka and their flight from their homeland. Sayigh's powerful account of Palestinians' economic marginalisation the social and psychological effects of being uprooted and the political oppression which they have faced continues to resonate today. Reissued with an extensive new foreword by Noam Chomsky, which brings the story that Sayigh tells up-to-date in the context of the Hamas victory and the war in Lebanon, this book is both a fascinating historical document and an essential insight into the situation in the contemporary Middle East.

The Palestinians...[gives] a voice to the people: to the old men who were children when the Balfour Declaration prepared the way for the exodus from Palestine; to the children who were born in the diaspora and who are now willing to contemplate certain death in a guerilla war rather than surrender the right to their homeland. The Palestinians is about individuals - lawyers, doctors, diplomats, craftsmen, students, labourers, businessmen, politicians, soldiers, fighters and peasants. Through them the book explores the crisis of a people without a land, demonstrating that the 'Palestinian problem' is not an abstract issue but an urgent human tragedy. Until this is recognized, Jonathan Dimbleby argues, there can be no just or lasting peace in the Middle East. -- Back cover.

The Palestinian Diaspora written by Helena Lindholm Schulz and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-07-27 with Social Science categories.

From the refugee camps of the Lebanon to the relative prosperity of life in the USA, the Palestinian diaspora has been dispersed across the world. In this pioneering study, Helena Lindholm Schulz examines the ways in which Palestinian identity has been formed in the diaspora through constant longing for a homeland lost. In so doing, the author advances the debate on the relationship between diaspora and the creation of national identity as well as on nationalist politics tied to a particular territory. But The Palestinian Diaspora also sheds light on the possibilities opened up by a transnational existence, the possibility of new, less territorialized identities, even in a diaspora as bound to the idea of an idealized homeland as the Palestinian. Members of the diaspora form new lives in new settings and the idea of homeland becomes one important, but not the only, source of identity. Ultimately though, Schulz argues, the strong attachment to Palestine makes the diaspora crucial in any understandings of how to formulate a viable strategy for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Dispossessed written by David Gilmour and has been published by Sphere this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982 with Arab-Israeli conflict categories.

This book covers the history of the Palestinian people, with particular emphasis on the causes of their exodus. It was originally published in 1980 and was updated in 1982, shortly after the Israeli invasion of the Lebanon. After a brief historical review of the region, there is a description of the gradual emergence of a Palestinian national identity during the twentieth century and an analysis of the 1948 War, which followed the establishment of the State of Israel. The author discusses the situation of the refugees and the Palestinians who remained in Israel, as well as the role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). After discussing the 1967 War, the book covers Israeli policy towards the occupied territories. Finally, there are chapters on the Palestine Liberation Organization and its relationship with Arab States, focusing on Lebanon. The author concludes with an analysis of the attitudes of the international community towards the Palestinian refugees. He argues for the creation of a Palestinian State based on the West Bank and Gaza.
