This dissertation focuses on the prose fiction (both novels and short stories) of eight Honduran female writers of the twentieth century. The study's focus is on the analysis of the depiction of female characters developed in the selected prose with the purpose of providing an objective vision of women in Honduras and their development in different contexts throughout the twentieth century. The majority of these writers have been ignored from the literary canon in the country. The goal of this study then is to address a significant lacuna with reference to the perception of women towards the creation of their identity and the conceptualization of nation as well. The theoretical approach used combines concepts from the post-colonialism, which researches the subjectivity of women as individuals and as a group, and feminist criticism, which provides the necessary tools to understand the conditions of women and the relations of power in the country. There is no intention, however, of extensively applying these theories in order to perpetuate perceptions of third world women as objects of victimization. This research is organized in five chapters. The first provides an overview of historical background, necessary to better understand the socio-cultural evolution of women and their identity. The other four follow the generational format proposed by Helen Umaña in El Panorama Crítico del Cuento Hondureño 1881-1999 (1999). She proposes five generations: romanticism, post-romanticism and modernism, post-modernism, regionalism, and the pre avant-garde, the avant-garde and social realism of 1954, and the post-avant-garde of 1984. This dissertation also concentrates on language as a means of creation and modification of the feminine creation that results from the spatial location that society sets for women. The writers under study regain power and the sense of belonging through the appropriation of language and the construction of their own microcosms. The dimensions that define women in a specific time in history are subjected to a diverse set of social, economic, and political structures. Even if women in Honduras were not considered full citizens until 1955, there is no doubt that their participation in the construction of the nation goes beyond the home. That is the reason why they should be taken into account. History is an interactive process that characterizes its participants in diverse ways and it is that diversity what triggers change and evolution.

This comprehensive look at contemporary life in the small Latin American nation allows high school students and general readers to explore the many facets of Honduran life and culture. More and more Hondurans and scholars today are becoming aware of the diversity in the nation, and are realizing that rather than a single, homogeneous culture, Honduras is made up of many different cultures. Gold incorporates this contemporary cultural consciousness in her treatment of Honduras's regional and linguistic diversity as well as in her descriptions of Honduras's indigenous communities. Key elements of the work include a look at national identity and cultural diversity, as well as an in-depth study of indigenous Honduras. Other chapters examine religion, as well as daily routines, cuisine, dress, media, sports, festivals, literature and oral storytelling, traditional crafts, visual arts, and music and dance. Ideal for high school students studying world culture, Latin American studies, and anthropology, as well as for general readers interested in the subject, Culture and Customs of Honduras is an essential addition for library shelves.

"The one source that sets reference collections on Latin American studies apart from all other geographic areas of the world.... The Handbook has provided scholars interested in Latin America with a bibliographical source of a quality unavailable to scholars in most other branches of area studies." —Latin American Research Review Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research under way in specialized areas. The Handbook of Latin American Studies is the oldest continuing reference work in the field. Lawrence Boudon, of the Library of Congress Hispanic Division, has been the editor since 2000, and Katherine D. McCann has been assistant editor since 1999. The subject categories for Volume 60 are as follows: Art History (including ethnohistory) Literature (including translations from the Spanish and Portuguese) Music Philosophy: Latin American Thought
