Around 1785, a woman was taken from her home in Senegambia and sent to Saint-Domingue in the Caribbean. Those who enslaved her there named her Rosalie. Her later efforts to escape slavery were the beginning of a family's quest, across five generations and three continents, for lives of dignity and equality. Freedom Papers sets the saga of Rosalie and her descendants against the background of three great antiracist struggles of the nineteenth century: the Haitian Revolution, the French Revolution of 1848, and the Civil War and Reconstruction in the United States. Freed during the Haitian Revolution, Rosalie and her daughter Elisabeth fled to Cuba in 1803. A few years later, Elisabeth departed for New Orleans, where she married a carpenter, Jacques Tinchant. In the 1830s, with tension rising against free persons of color, they left for France. Subsequent generations of Tinchants fought in the Union Army, argued for equal rights at Louisiana's state constitutional convention, and created a transatlantic tobacco network that turned their Creole past into a commercial asset. Yet the fragility of freedom and security became clear when, a century later, Rosalie's great-great-granddaughter Marie-José was arrested by Nazi forces occupying Belgium. Freedom Papers follows the Tinchants as each generation tries to use the power and legitimacy of documents to help secure freedom and respect. The strategies they used to overcome the constraints of slavery, war, and colonialism suggest the contours of the lives of people of color across the Atlantic world during this turbulent epoch.

Sua prosperidade individual, porém, não significou nenhum abalo no regime de desigualdade de classe e de raça vigente. A despeito de quem o operasse, o sistema escravista sempre esteve a serviço dos interesses da classe senhorial branca. Joaquim de Almeida foi um africano relativamente bem situado numa sociedade na qual a condição "natural" dos seus era a de despossessão absoluta. Dentre os milhões de escravizados no Brasil, ele se tornou não apenas um homem rico, mas alguém que explorou o negócio mais rentável de seu tempo: o tráfico negreiro. No entanto, a Revolta dos Malês, em 1835, representaria um ponto de inflexão na sua história e de toda a comunidade de africanos que acumularam algum bem e se alforriaram, experimentando certa ascensão social em Salvador. A rebelião atiçou os medos que as elites brancas tinham da insurgência negra e instaurou o pavor de que aqui viesse a ser um novo Haiti. Além da repressão imediata e implacável, as autoridades promoveram campanha massiva de deportação dos libertos africanos. Joaquim de Almeida não esperou; optou pelo autoexílio e levou consigo seu entorno social (mulheres, crianças, parentes, companheiros e agregados), gerando uma transplantação comunitária e de todo um modo de viver para a África. Sua trajetória ímpar abre a possibilidade de entender, de um lado, como o oprimido pode internalizar e reproduzir a ideologia hegemônica, tornando-se opressor. De outro, permite também captar um traço indelével da sociedade baiana — e brasileira — da época: o racismo antiafricano, que se metamorfosearia na forma peculiar do racismo antinegro na constituição da nacionalidade brasileira.

Refletem também as mudanças tecnológicas e o aparelho celular como um dos instrumentos de denúncia. Nas décadas de 1970 e 1980, a Comissão Pastoral da Terra era uma das raras instituições que bradavam contra o crime. A partir de meados da década de 1990, finalmente, houve aumento de sensibilidade para o problema em alguns setores da sociedade e, no início do século XXI, mudanças legislativas e, pelo executivo, a promulgação de planos nacionais de enfrentamento ao crime.
