Reform-konzilien von Pisa, Konstanz und Basel und die Ursachen ihres gänzlichen Mißerfolgs werden ausführlich gewürdigt, unter Hervor hebung der Tatsache zugleich, daß diese Konzilien ihr Gedächtnis du'rch abscheuliche Beschlüsse gegen die Häretiker für alle Zeiten selbst gebrandmarkt haben. Die letzten Abschnitte sind der Schilderung der geistigen Strömungen gewidmet, welche die Gemüter der Menschen für die Reformation empfänglich machten, und der Schilderung der politischen Zustände und Ereignisse, welche in zunehmendem Maße die äußere Macht des Papsttums lähmten. Es war hierbei auf die große Verbreitung der ge druckten deutschen Bibeln seit 1466, auf das Aufblühen aller Wissenschaften, die Begründung zweier der päpstlichen Vormundschaft nahezu entwachsener Universitäten, '1'ubingen und Wittenberg, auf die merkwürdigen Entwicklungen innerhalb eines Teils des augustiner-ordens, auf die Schriften des Erasmus von Rotterdam und mehrere andere einflußreiche Tatsachen des näheren einzugehen; auf der andern Seite galt es zu zeigen, daß die Verfeindung zwischen Papsttum und Kaisertum unter der späteren Regierung Kaiser Friedrichs 111.
