"Canossa" - Symbolwort für die große Epoche des Reformpapsttums, deren Zeitrahmen hier vom Pontifikat Leos IX. über die Leitfigur der Epoche, Gregor VII., bis zum ersten Lateranense 1123 gesteckt wird. In dieser Epoche sind Synoden und Konzilien unter dem Vorsitz des Papstes häufiger als in jedem anderen Zeitabschnitt zuvor oder danach. Diese rein quantitative Feststellung allein lässt schon vermuten, dass den Bischofsversammlungen in dieser Phase der Kirchengeschichte eine gewichtige Rolle zugekommen sein muss. Die dichte Folge der Synoden, die mit dem Pontifikat Leos IX. beginnt, ist als wichtiges Mittel der Durchsetzung des Jurisdiktionsprimates betrachtet worden. Gerade deshalb ist es um so verwunderlicher, dass abgesehen von Hefeles Konziliengeschichte, der ersten und bis heute einzigen Gesamtdarstellung der Konziliengeschichte überhaupt, die Synoden und Konzilien des Reformpapsttums keine monographische Behandlung erfahren haben. Die vorliegende Untersuchung verfolgt zwei Ziele: zum einen die streng an den Quellen ausgerichtete und auf vollständige Erfassung sämtlicher zur Verfügung stehender Nachrichten bedachte Darstellung aller Synoden der Zeit des Reformpapsttums in Italien und im Reich; zum anderen die Erarbeitung der Konzilsidee dieser Epoche, der sich mit Hilfe von zusätzlichen Fragestellungen genähert werden soll.
