This volume is a selection of papers presented at the international conference on Translation and Censorship. From the 18th Century to the Present Day, held in Lisbon in November 2006. Although censorship in Spain under Franco dictatorship has already been thoroughly studied, the Portuguese situation under Salazar and Caetano has been, so far, almost ignored by the academic research. This is then an attempt to start filling this gap. At the same time, new case studies about the Spanish context are presented, thus contributing to a critical view of two Iberian dictatorial regimes. However other geographical and time contexts are also included: former dictatorships such as Brazil and Communist Czechoslovakia; present day countries with very strict censoring apparatus such as China, or more subtle censorial mechanisms as Turkey and Ukraine. Specific situations of past centuries are given some attention: the reception of Ovid in Portugal, the translation of English narrative fiction into Spanish in the 18th century, the translation of children literature in Victorian England and the emergence of the picaresque novel in Portugal in the 19th century. Other forms of censorship, namely self-censorship, are studied in this volume as well. "The book fits in one of the most innovative fields of research in translation studies, i.e. the study of social and political constraints on translation processes and translation functions. More specifically, the concept of censorship is crucial to the understanding of these constraints, especially in spatio-temporal settings where translation exhibits conflicts between what is acceptable for and what is prohibited by a given culture. For that reason, detailed descriptive research is needed in as many situations as possible. It gives an excellent view on the complex mechanisms of censorship with regard to translation within a large number of modern European and non European cultures. In addition to articles devoted to cases dealing with China, Brazil, Great-Britain, Turkey, Ukraine or Czechoslovakia, Spain and Portugal occupy a prominent role. As a whole, the volume marks an important step forward in our growing understanding of the role of socio-political factors for the development and changes of translation policies. Students notoriously vote with their feet, seeking out the best and most innovative teachers of their subject. The most ambitious students have been travelling long distances for their education since universities were first founded in the 13th century, making their own educational pilgrimage or peregrinatio. This volume deals with the peregrinatio medica from the viewpoint of the travelling students: who went where; how did they travel; what did they find when they arrived; what did they take back with them from their studies. Even a single individual could transform medical studies or practice back home on the periphery by trying to reform teaching and practice the way they had seen it at the best universities. Other contributions look at the universities themselves and how they were actively developed to attract students, and at some of the most successful teachers, such as Boerhaave at Leiden or the Monros at Edinburgh. The essays show how increasing levels of wealth allowed more and more students to make their pilgrimages, travelling for weeks at a time to sit at the feet of a particular master. In medicine this meant that, over the period c.1500 to 1789, a succession of universities became the medical school of choice for ambitious students: Padua and Bologna in the 1500s, Paris, Leiden and Montpellier in the 1600s, and Leiden, Göttingen and Edinburgh in the 1700s. The arrival of foreign students brought wealth to the university towns and this significant economic benefit meant that the governors of these universities tried to ensure the defence of freedom of religion and freedom of speech, thus providing the best conditions for the promotion of new views and innovation in medicine. The collection presents a new take on the history of medical education, as well as universities, travel and education more widely in ancien régime Europe.

Os passionários polifónicos de Coimbra e Guimarães, produção geminada do Mosteiro de Santa Cruz no início do seu apogeu musical, felizmente identificados no momento certo, abriram um horizonte novo no que respeita a prática da música sacra em Portugal, excecionalmente abundante e qualificada no longo período de crise sócio-política que atravessou as últimas décadas do século XVI e todo o século XVII. O estudo aprofundado dos mesmos, complementado por numerosos espécimes congéneres reconhecidos nos principais arquivos de música portugueses, deu a conhecer uma forma própria de se cantar a Paixão litúrgica em Portugal. Definido o modelo de cantochão tradicional português, na sua linha melódica como na sua dimensão rítmica, verificou-se que o mesmo é veio condutor (cantus firmus) de elaborações polifónicas de grande qualidade saídas da inspiração de alguns dos compositores mais significativos da época, como António Carreira, D. Pedro de Cristo, João Lourenço Rebelo e Francisco Martins. Neste sentido, e até à introdução em Portugal do chamado «italianismo musical» por parte de D. João V, cantava-se com originalidade nas igrejas portuguesas, face ao restante mundo cristão, nos dias solenes da Semana Santa. Sem a pretensão de esgotar o tema, sobretudo na sua dimensão de prática musical barroca, procedeu-se a uma fundamentação histórico-litúrgica do canto da Paixão e a uma documentação profunda da sua ritualização em Portugal. Ficou devidamente sumariado quase tudo o que se refere à prática monódica e polifónica desta espécie litúrgica, tanto impressa como manuscrita, de que é justo salientar a ênfase dada pelos compositores da época, certamente inspirados por uma espiritualidade muito própria, a certos versos da Paixão, designadamente alguns Ditos de Cristo. Este livro, chamando a atenção do mundo para uma dimensão desconhecida da cultura portuguesa, permite conhecer a verdadeira singularidade de um reportório que, para além do seu notável valor específico, indicia o alto apreço que a Liturgia da Paixão desempenhou na sociedade portuguesa da época em referência.
