Este libro propone una nueva categoría de análisis para el estudio de la educación física y los deportes en México, la "cultura física" entendida como el conjunto de ideas, prácticas y creencias que respecto al ejercicio corporal se expresan en determinada sociedad. Se propone que las primeras manifestaciones para estimular la actividad física en el siglo XIX estuvieron a cargo de individuos particulares quienes, por sus propios conocimientos, gustos e intereses económicos, establecieron los primeros centros dedicados a la práctica y enseñanza metódica y sistematizada de la gimnasia. Fue en torno a esos gimnasios -que funcionaron como empresas privadas a partir de la década de los cuarenta- que se introdujo y desarrolló la novedad en materia de ejercicio corporal del siglo XIX en México: la gimnasia o gimnástica, como entonces se la llamaba. Se analizan los mecanismos a través de los cuales la enseñanza de la gimnasia se incorporó al mediar el siglo en las escuelas públicas y privadas de la ciudad de México y cómo a consecuencia de la derrota militar sufrida ante Estados Unidos se creó la Escuela Gimnástica del Ejército. Por último, se analiza cómo a través de la labor desempeñada por gimnastas y médicos se desarrolló la rama medicinal de la gimnasia estableciéndose al menos un gimnasio especializado en la rehabilitación física.
