Word classes are linguistic categories serving as basis in the description of the vocabulary and grammar of natural languages. While important publications are regularly devoted to their definition, identification, and classification, in the field of Romance linguistics we lack a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of the current research. This Manual offers an updated and detailed discussion of all relevant aspects related to word classes in the Romance languages. In the first part, word classes are discussed from both a theoretical and historical point of view. The second part of the volume takes as its point of departure single word classes, described transversally in all the main Romance languages, while the third observes the relevant word classes from the point of view of specific Romance(-based) varieties. The fourth part explores Romance word classes at the interface of grammar and other fields of research. Polysemy and polyfunctionality are key components in the motivational structure of discourse markers. In this study the author investigates adjectival units that contribute to discourse formation in the spoken Spanish of Chile. The author shows that polyfunctionality drives not only polysemy but also grammaticalization. This grammaticalization is examined by the author in the field of tension between oral and written traditions.

Adverbs seem to raise unsolvable issues for theories of word-classes, both crosslinguistically and language-internally. The contributions in this volume all address this categorial problem from a variety of formal and functional points of view. In the first part, current definitions of the class for Romance and Germanic languages are being questioned and improved, drawing on data from English, German and Italian. The second part is devoted to adverbial scope in Romance (French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese), Germanic, Modern Greek and Chinese, under special consideration of modal adverbs, subject-oriented manner adverbs and domain adverbs and adverbials. Syntactic and semantic relationships appear to lay the ground for a robust and fine-grained functional definition of adverbs and adverbials.

La celeridad y la intensidad de los cambios que manifiesta el mundo globalizado me impulsaron a escribir otra vez. Publiqué recientemente Marketing de su carrera laboral y Cambio y vida laboral, y ahora quiero abordar el tema de la búsqueda y selección de recursos humanos dentro del nuevo paradigma del que tanto hablé en aquellos libros. Ya en El sillón vacío, publicado en 1990, compartí con mis lectores gran parte de las técnicas de uso profesional que se usaban para medir y evaluar características objetivas de aptitud. Por aquel entonces, yo trabajaba publicando avisos en periódicos, aplicaba test psicotécnicos, tenía un archivo físico de carpetas colgantes… y lo hacía en un contexto exclusivamente local, nacional. ¡Qué simplista, hasta ingenuo, diría, me parece ahora ese texto! Cuando el siglo XX finalizaba, tuve que ponerme en órbita global. Mi trabajo implica frecuentes viajes y debo entrevistar en aeropuertos, o vía teleconferencia, o en otros idiomas, entender los diferentes “perfiles” culturales y organizativos de las nuevas empresas, que son productos de múltiples fusiones, divisiones, adquisiciones, holdings, etc. La sola mención de algunos de esos cambios hace patente el fuerte efecto que tienen sobre la problemática de la búsqueda y la selección de recursos humanos talentosos. Coincidirá el lector conmigo en que, abruptamente, pasamos de: predominio gubernamental a privatizaciones globales de grandes empresas, de mercados controlados al endiosamiento del libre mercado, de mercados cerrados a mercados abiertos en un plano global, de considerar clave lo financiero o tecnológico a considerar el capital humano como factor clave, de valorar la lealtad a una empresa a valorar las habilidades y las aptitudes que resulten en beneficio de los accionistas. La lista de contrastes podría seguir y seguir… Lo que se define como “talento” cambió sustancialmente. Y, en consecuencia, también cambiaron las técnicas y los procedimientos aptos para un proceso de búsqueda y selección. Por eso me decidí a retomar el tema. Se lo debía a mis clientes. Se lo debía a mis colegas mundiales de quienes tanto aprendí. Pero, por sobre todo, se lo debía a todos aquellos que, por diversas razones, se ven confrontados con la necesidad de hacer o aprender a hacer “en directo” este proceso. Algunos de los principios básicos de El sillón vacío todavía tienen vigencia. Otros conceptos ya no se aplican. Algunas herramientas, transformadas, siguen siendo útiles. Muchas son nuevas. En las páginas de este libro me propongo mostrarles esos cambios. Hay algo que, gracias a Dios, no cambia: el enorme desafío que implica esta, mi amada especialización profesional.
