Paradox and Counterparadox introduces the English-speaking public to the first results of a research plan drawn up my the Milan Center for Family Studies at the end of 1971 and put into practice at the beginning of 1972. The book reports the therapeutic work carried out by the authors with fifteen families, five with children presenting serious psychotic disturbances, and ten with young adults diagnosed as schizophrenics in acute phase. Though accepting the Bleulerian term schizophrenia, by now in general use, the authors have used it to indicate not the sickness of an individual–as in the traditional medical model–but a peculiar pattern of communication inseparable from the other patterns of communication observable in the natural group (in this case, the family) in which it manifests itself. Starting from the position that modern sciences concerned with communication emphasize the central role of paradox as the source of paralyzing disturbances as well as of creative transformations, the authors demonstrate that it is possible to intervene in a family in schizophrenic transaction by devising original and paradoxical methods in order to release the action-pattern from disturbance to transformation. The counterparadoxes generated in this process, illustrated through a great number of examples, are rigorously analyzed in accordance with the conceptual models provided by general systems theory, by cybernetics, and by the pragmatics of human communication. The reader will recognize, in the cases presented, the stimulating originality and efficacy of this approach, one whose interest exceeds the purely clinical and which offers new points of departure for an ecologic vision of human relationships. 'Amazing and Miraculous' are terms that are often used in describing the effectiveness of paradoxical interventions in bypassing treatment-resistance. However, while this counter-intuitive method was known to be promote rapid and lasting change, the mechanism for change remained a mystery. In addition, when not handled correctly the approach was known to have the potential to 'backfire'. Paradox Psychology resolves the mystery that has surrounded this method, and offers a simple and concise theoretical framework that will allow clinicians to utilize the approach in an educated and safe manner.

"Amazing" and "Miraculous" are terms often used to describe paradoxical interventions. Of the many therapeutic methods in psychology, this is the most fascinating to observe and implement. The practice gained notoriety in the 1970's when 'master therapists', including Milton Erickson - Jay Haley - Salvador Minuchin - Fritz Perls and others, utilized the method. The technique - known for "joining and avoiding power struggles" - has the ability to bypass treatment resistance with a diverse range of client types and disorders. As a result, this counter-intuitive approach gained the reputation for 'rapid and amazing' outcomes. However there was one problem. - No one could give a simple explanation as to what was happening and why it worked... Although quite powerful, the mechanism behind the approach has long been considered an 'unsolvable theoretical mystery'. As a result, when the field promoted 'evidence based treatment', paradoxical interventions never received a passing grade. This book resolves the mystery of the paradoxical approach. In revealing this secret, this work brings a paradigm shift that renders obsolete many basic assumptions and theories of conventional psychology. In unexpected fashion, this endeavor utilizes a well-known scientific model to unify all major schools of thought under a single umbrella theory. In so doing, this work provides focus and insight as to the 'active ingredient' that underlies all successful treatment. Once you read this book, psychology will never be the same...

The Paradox Of Choice written by Barry Schwartz and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-10-13 with Psychology categories.

Whether we're buying a pair of jeans, ordering a cup of coffee, selecting a long-distance carrier, applying to college, choosing a doctor, or setting up a 401(k), everyday decisions—both big and small—have become increasingly complex due to the overwhelming abundance of choice with which we are presented. As Americans, we assume that more choice means better options and greater satisfaction. But beware of excessive choice: choice overload can make you question the decisions you make before you even make them, it can set you up for unrealistically high expectations, and it can make you blame yourself for any and all failures. In the long run, this can lead to decision-making paralysis, anxiety, and perpetual stress. And, in a culture that tells us that there is no excuse for falling short of perfection when your options are limitless, too much choice can lead to clinical depression. In The Paradox of Choice, Barry Schwartz explains at what point choice—the hallmark of individual freedom and self-determination that we so cherish—becomes detrimental to our psychological and emotional well-being. In accessible, engaging, and anecdotal prose, Schwartz shows how the dramatic explosion in choice—from the mundane to the profound challenges of balancing career, family, and individual needs—has paradoxically become a problem instead of a solution. Schwartz also shows how our obsession with choice encourages us to seek that which makes us feel worse. By synthesizing current research in the social sciences, Schwartz makes the counter intuitive case that eliminating choices can greatly reduce the stress, anxiety, and busyness of our lives. He offers eleven practical steps on how to limit choices to a manageable number, have the discipline to focus on those that are important and ignore the rest, and ultimately derive greater satisfaction from the choices you have to make.

The Human Paradox written by Ralph Heintzman and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-31 with Philosophy categories.

What is a human being? What does it mean to be human? How can you lead your life in ways that best fulfil your own nature? In The Human Paradox, Ralph Heintzman explores these vital questions and offers an exciting new vision of the nature of the human. The Human Paradox aims to counter or correct several contemporary assumptions about the nature of the human, especially the tendency of Western culture, since the seventeenth century, to identify the human with rationality and the rational mind. Using the lens of the virtues, The Human Paradox shows how rediscovering the nature of the human can help not just to understand one’s own paradoxical nature but to act in ways that are more consistent with its full reality. Offering accessible insight from both traditional and contemporary thought, The Human Paradox shows how a fuller, richer vision of the human can help address urgent contemporary problems, including the challenges of cultural and religious diversity, human migration and human rights, the role of the market, artificial intelligence, the future of democracy, and global climate change. This fresh perspective on the Western past will guide readers into what it means to be human and open new possibilities for the future.
