Wie aus Fotos Kunst wurde »Vorbilder Nachbilder« - das Begriffspaar verweist auf Bezüge zwischen Bildern, aber auch auf ihre Produktion, in der auf bereits vorliegende Bilder zurückgegriffen wird. So dienten in den Kunstakademien und Kunstgewerbeschulen im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert Fotografien als »Vorlagen« oder »Vorbilder« und fungierten als spezieller didaktischer Bildtypus. Fotografische Vorlagen waren wichtige Hilfsmittel in der kreativen Praxis der angehenden Künstlerinnen und Künstler und generierten dementsprechend »Nachbilder«: Gemälde, Skulpturen, Zeichnungen und Grafiken. Im Archiv der Universität der Künste Berlin hat sich eine fotografische Lehrsammlung bewahrt, die an den Vorgängereinrichtungen, der Berliner Kunstakademie und der führenden Kunstgewerbeschule, entstanden ist und bis in die 1850er Jahre zurückreicht. Mit ungefähr 25.000 fotografischen Einzelblättern, zu denen Konvolute und Alben hinzukommen, ist diese Sammlung in Deutschland einzigartig. Lange Zeit wenig beachtet, konnte sie in den zurückliegenden Jahren archivarisch und wissenschaftlich aufgearbeitet werden. In diesem Buch und mit den vom Münchner Stadtmuseum vorbereiteten Ausstellungen wird die Sammlung erstmals präsentiert. Zu den äußerst vielfältigen Bildmotiven zählen dabei Kunstreproduktionen, Landschaften, Naturstudien von Wasser, Wolken, Bäumen, Pflanzen, Felsen etc., Architekturen, Stillleben mit Früchten, Gläsern etc., Porträts, Genreszenen, Lebende Bilder, Akte und Tierstudien sowie Orient- und Historiendarstellungen. Die Vorlagenstudien - in Frankreich als »Études d'après nature« verbreitet - stammen von bekannten europäischen und amerikanischen Fotografen, darunter: Fratelli Alinari, Ottomar Anschütz, Karl Blossfeldt, Adolphe Braun, Eugène Cuvelier, Georg Maria Eckert, Constantin Famin, Wilhelm von Gloeden, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Jakob August Lorent, Gustave le Gray, James Robertson, Henry Peach Robinson, Giorgio Sommer, Carleton Watkins. What are photographs ‘doing’ in museums? Why are some photographs valued and others not? Why are some photographic practices visible and not others? What value systems and hierarchies do they reflect? What Photographs Do explores how museums are defined through their photographic practices. It focuses not on formal collections of photographs as accessioned objects, be they ‘fine art’ or ‘archival’, but on what might be termed ‘non-collections’: the huge number of photographs that are integral to the workings of museums yet ‘invisible’, existing outside the structures of ‘the collection’. These photographs, however, raise complex and ambiguous questions about the ways in which such accumulations of photographs create the values, hierarchies, histories and knowledge-systems, through multiple, folded and overlapping layers that might be described as the museum’s ecosystem. These photographic dynamics are studied through the prism of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, an institution with over 150 years' engagement with photography’s multifaceted uses and existences in the museum. The book differs from more usual approaches to museum studies in that it presents not only formal essays but short ‘auto-ethnographic’ interventions from museum practitioners, from studio photographers and image managers to conservators and non-photographic curators, who address the significance of both historical and contemporary practices of photography in their work. As such this book offers an extensive and unique range of accounts of what photographs ‘do’ in museums, expanding the critical discourse of both photography and museums.
