Las II Jornadas Internacionales de Historia del Paraguay, realizadas en la Universidad de Montevideo (Uruguay) entre el 14 y el 18 de junio de 2010, contaron con la participación de treinta y dos académicos provenientes de casi una docena de países repartidos en tres continentes. Además de historiadores, asistieron críticos literarios, bibliógrafos, especialistas en información, y lingüistas, con lo que se mantuvo el espíritu multidisciplinario que caracterizara a las I Jornadas realizadas en 2008. En esta ocasión, el trabajo académico estuvo articulado en torno a seis ejes temáticos y cronológicos: el proceso de tránsito de la época colonial a la independiente; la Guerra de la Triple Alianza; la diplomacia extranjera en Paraguay; la Guerra del Chaco; sociedad y política paraguayas; literatura, ideología y memoria; e historiografía paraguaya y sobre Paraguay. El presente volumen incluye aquellas ponencias presentadas para publicación por sus autores y seleccionadas por el comité editorial integrado por Jan Kleinpenning, Barbara Potthast, Luc Capdevila, Thomas Whigham y Juan Manuel Casal.

"Yo el Supremo Dictador de la República: Ordeno que al acaecer mi muerte mi cadáver sea decapitado; la cabeza puesta en una pica por tres días en la Plaza de la República donde se convocará al pueblo al son de las campanas echadas al vuelo. Todos mis servidores civiles y militares sufrirán pena de horca. Sus cadáveres serán enterrados en potreros de extramuros sin cruz ni marca que memore sus nombres". Esa inscripción garabateada sorprende una mañana a los secuaces del dictador, que corren prestos a eliminarla de la vida de los aterrados súbditos del patriarca. Así arranca una de las grandes novela de la literatura en castellano de este siglo: Yo el Supremo, de Augusto Roa Bastos, Premio Cervantes 1989. La obra no es sólo un extraordinario ejercicio de gran profundidad narrativa sino también un testimonio escalofriante sobre uno de los peores males contemporáneos: la dictadura. El déspota solitario que reina sobre Paraguay es, en la obra de Roa, el argumento para describir una figura despiadada que es asimismo metáfora de la biografía de América Latina.

Este volumen forma parte de la serie de libros Memorias de la Represión que pone a disposición del público los resultados de un programa desarrollado por el Panel Regional de América Latina (RAP) del Social Science Research Council, con el propósito de promover la investigación y la formación de investigadores sobre las memorias de la represión política en el Cono Sur. Bajo la dirección de Elizabeth Jelin y Carlos Iván Degregori, y con fondos proporcionados por las fundaciones Ford, Rockefeller y Hewlett, el programa apoyó a cerca de 60 investigadores jóvenes de Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay y los Estados Unidos. El programa fue diseñado para encarar tres cuestiones diferentes, aunque relacionadas entre sí. La primera es la necesidad de generar avances teóricos y de investigación que contribuyan a enriquecer los debates sobre la naturaleza de las memorias en la región, sobre su rol en la constitución de identidades colectivas y sobre las consecuencias de las luchas por la memoria sobre las prácticas sociales y políticas en sociedades en transición. La segunda cuestión u objetivo es promover el desarrollo de una nueva generación de investigadores con una formación teórica y metodológica sólidas, preparados para articular perspectivas novedosas sobre los procesos sociales de memoria, pero preparados también para abordar la gran variedad de temas candentes que surgirán en el Cono Sur y en Latinoamérica en el futuro. Finalmente, el programa apuntaba a la creación de una red de intelectuales públicos de la región preocupados por el estudio de la memoria societal y temas relacionados con ella. This book presents a cultural history of psychology that analyzes the diverse contexts in which psychological knowledge and practices have developed in Latin America. Between the mid-eighteenth and the mid-nineteenth century, the idea of dictatorship changed drastically, leaving back the ancient Roman paradigm and opening the way to a rule with extraordinary powers and which was unlimited in time. While the French Revolution produced an acceleration of history and created new narratives of dictatorship, with Napoleon Bonaparte as its most iconic embodiment, the Latin American struggle for independence witnessed an unprecedented concentration of rulers seeking those new nations’ sovereignty through dictatorial rule. Starting from the assumption that the age of revolution was one of dictators too, this book aims at exploring how this new type of rulers whose authority was no longer based on dynastic succession or religious consecration sought legitimacy.
