This volume includes contributions from the 9th Parallel-in-Time (PinT) workshop, an annual gathering devoted to the field of time-parallel methods, aiming to adapt existing computer models to next-generation machines by adding a new dimension of scalability. As the latest supercomputers advance in microprocessing ability, they require new mathematical algorithms in order to fully realize their potential for complex systems. The use of parallel-in-time methods will provide dramatically faster simulations in many important areas, including biomedical (e.g., heart modeling), computational fluid dynamics (e.g., aerodynamics and weather prediction), and machine learning applications. Computational and applied mathematics is crucial to this progress, as it requires advanced methodologies from the theory of partial differential equations in a functional analytic setting, numerical discretization and integration, convergence analyses of iterative methods, and the development and implementation of new parallel algorithms. Therefore, the workshop seeks to bring together an interdisciplinary group of experts across these fields to disseminate cutting-edge research and facilitate discussions on parallel time integration methods.

The foundations of parallel computation, especially the efficiency of computation, are the concern of this book. The interconnection network is one of the most basic components of a massively parallel computer system. Such systems consist of hundreds or thousands of processors interconnected to work cooperatively on computations. One of the central problems in parallel computing is the task of mapping a collection of processes onto the processors and routing network of a parallel machine. Once this mapping is done, it is critical to schedule computations within and communication among processors so that the necessary inputs for a process are available where and when the process is scheduled to be computed. This book contains the refereed proceedings of a DIMACS Workshop on Massively Parallel Computation, held in February 1994. The workshop brought together researchers from universities and laboratories, as well as practitioners involved in the design, implementation, and application of massively parallel systems. In Sentencing in Time, Meyer asks whether—in overlooking the irreconcilability of these two modes of thinking about time—we are failing to accomplish the ends we believe the criminal justice system is designed to serve. Drawing on work in philosophy, legal theory, jurisprudence, and the history of penology, Meyer explores how, rather than condemning prisoners to an experience of time bereft of meaning, we might instead make the experience of incarceration constructively meaningful—and thus better aligned with social objectives of deterring crime, reforming offenders, and restoring justice.
