C'est après la Seconde Guerre mondiale que la recherche française sur les pays tropicaux se structure selon un nouveau dispositif institutionnel. Dès 1946, Madagascar fait partie des pays précurseurs disposant d'un centre de recherche (PIRSM, Institut de recherche scientifique de Madagascar), de moyens logistiques et humains pour mener à bien ses objectifs scientifiques et de développement. Depuis, l'IRSM a été intégré à l'Orstom (Office de la recherche scientifique et technique outre-mer), devenu IRD (Institut de recherche pour le développement) en 1998, et le partenariat avec les chercheurs et universitaires nationaux s'est considérablement élargi. À travers différents parcours de recherche, cet ouvrage dresse, soixante-cinq ans plus tard, un bilan du chemin parcouru et dessine un panorama de l'évolution des connaissances dans les principaux domaines investis par l'IRD et ses partenaires : géographie, anthropologie, économie, démographie, santé, hydrologie, pédologie, minéralogie, océanographie, botanique et travaux sur les substances naturelles. Ainsi, des acteurs malgaches et français de la recherche nous livrent leur vision de l'évolution de leurs disciplines et nous présentent les modalités scientifiques et institutionnelles de leur collaboration. La production scientifique analysée permet par ailleurs de redonner vie à des travaux anciens peu accessibles. Outre les bibliographies propres à chaque chapitre, l'ouvrage est accompagné d'un DVD comprenant plus de 3 000 références issues de la base documentaire Horizon Pleins Textes de l'IRD, dont 1 800 disponibles en version intégrale (fichiers PDF) couvrant la majeure partie des travaux réalisés à Madagascar par l'IRD et ses partenaires malgaches.
