Les ressources naturelles du continent africain diminuent constamment du fait de leur surexploitation par l'homme. Afin d'éviter la destruction totale de populations animales et végétales, l'Homme a crée les aires protégées, les parcs nationaux, des réserves naturelles, etc. Ainsi, pour une gestion durable de ces ressources naturelles, il convient d'impliquer la population locale dans sa gestion en vue d'en tirer profit par l'aménagement écotouristique. En prélude, il convient d'évaluer le potentiel de la zone concernée. C'est dans ce cadre que nous avons procédé à l'inventaire de la grande faune dans la Mafou (554 Km2), première Zone Intégralement Protégée du Parc National du Haut Niger dans la période de mars à mai 2002. Cette zone a été subdivisée en trois blocs (Bakaria, Thiamya et Confluence) dans lesquels ont été placés 111 transects pour une longueur totale de 751,08 km. Cette zone est caractérisée par la diversité des formations végétales (savanicoles et forestières) qui se lie directement à la grande variété de ses espèces animales. Un total de 281 contacts avec 18 espèces de grands mammifères a été enrégistré.
