This biography of Heke-nuku-mai-nga-iwi Busby brings together the varied life experiences that have made Hec Busby the master waka builder, waka expert, celestial navigator and highly regarded Te Rarawa elder that he is today. He is one of the few active waka taua builders and is responsible for the completion of more than a dozen of these waka for iwi around the country. Acknowledged as the pre-eminent holder of knowledge relating to waka culture, he is frequently consulted for his expert opinion. A real outdoorsman, Hec turned his hand to many pursuits, leading him to set up his own bridge construction business in his twenties. From the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between Indigenous and settler cultures to the emergence of the first-ever state-funded Māori television network, New Zealand has been a hotbed of Indigenous concerns. Given its history of colonization, coping with biculturalism is central to New Zealand life. Much of this “bicultural drama” plays out in the media and is molded by an anxiety surrounding the ongoing struggle over citizenship rights that is seated within the politics of recognition. The Fourth Eye brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars to provide a critical and comprehensive account of the intricate and complex relationship between the media and Māori culture. Examining the Indigenous mediascape, The Fourth Eye shows how Māori filmmakers, actors, and media producers have depicted conflicts over citizenship rights and negotiated the representation of Indigenous people. From nineteenth-century Māori-language newspapers to contemporary Māori film and television, the contributors explore a variety of media forms including magazine cover stories, print advertisements, commercial images, and current Māori-language newspapers to illustrate the construction, expression, and production of indigeneity through media. On 15 October 2007, 300 hundred police officers dressed in full riot gear raided the township of Ruatoki, which lies at the northern end of the Ureweras. At the same time Ruatoki was being locked-down, police raids were taking place in other parts of the country. By the end of the day, 17 people were reported as arrested: 4 in Wellington, 6 in Auckland, 1 in Palmerston North, 1 in Hamilton, and 5 in the Bay of Plenty area. The "global war on terror," launched in the U.S. five years earlier, had finally arrived in New Zealand.
