This book presents an international research-based framework that has empowered parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to become critical decision makers to actively guide their child’s learning and self-advocacy. Parents can use this framework to identify their child’s vision and dreams, and to work with educators and service providers to establish specific learning goals and to implement effective interventions and programs that enable their child to achieve those goals and realise their vision for the future. The book begins by reviewing available research on evidence-based practice for children with ASD and outlining the Cycle of Learning decision-making framework for parents and professionals. Throughout the remainder of the book, case studies are presented to illustrate the ways in which different parents have successfully utilised this framework to develop effective plans for their child and to advocate for learning and education programs for both their child and other children with ASD in school and community settings. Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

"This study, through nine hypotheses, examined the differences in parental coping ability; mental health and stress; satisfaction with marriage, life, and job; and work interest and quality between parents of children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and parents raising a typical child. Repeated measures analysis of variance and repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance was used to analyse 28 families comprised of two parents and at least one child. The results indicated that parents of ASD children did not differ from parents of typical children on coping ability, world assumptions, marital satisfaction, satisfaction with life, interest and quality of work, or hours of work missed. The results did however show that parents of ASD children experienced significantly more parental stress and more mental health issues than did parents of typical children. Several conclusions were drawn on the relationship between coping ability, mental health, and work outcomes."--P.ii.

Autism affects approximately one in 110 children in the United States. Many parents choose to treat their children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with complementary and alternative (CAM) treatments. In this study, factors that contribute to parents' decisions to treat their child with ASD with a complementary or alternative (CAM) treatment were examined through the use of an online survey. Invitations to participate in the study were sent to approximately 800 support groups for parents of children with autism and information from 452 respondents was used in data analysis. Information regarding the impact of parental characteristics, children's behavioral symptoms, characteristics of specific CAM treatments, and possible barriers to treatment were obtained and analyzed. Overall, the responding parents/guardians were mothers, fathers, and grandmothers with a mean age of 41.58. The majority self-identified as White (86.7%), with 41.8% having attained a college education. The average income of respondents was $89,106.66. 100% of the participants in the study indicated they had tried a CAM in the past, or were currently using one. Results indicated a statistically significant relationship between severity of symptoms with having tried treatments in the past, and with currently using treatments. In addition, several specific treatments that were tried in the past and were currently being used were correlated with greater severity of symptoms. Severity of symptoms was not predictive of the total number of CAMs used. Educational level and marital status of parents were predictive of CAM use. In addition, individuals with a graduate level degree were more likely to use CAM than those with technical school/some college. Respondents who were married were significantly more likely to use CAMs than those who were divorced. Results indicated that accessibility and acceptance of treatments were predictive of CAM use. Possible barriers to treatment, as well as study limitations and implications, are also discussed. The findings of this study are important, as while the use of CAM treatments is growing among the population of children with autism, information regarding the reasons parents decide to use CAM treatments with their children with autism is relatively sparse.

Parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a life-long developmental disorder, responded to an online survey considering their stress experience, affective symptoms and marital satisfaction. As these parents sourced different programs for their children, type of program was used to assign parents to different groups in order to consider their stress, affective symptoms and marital satisfaction. The type of programs parents used included the Applied Behaviour Analysis (n=15); Early Intervention Centre (n=13) and no formal program (n=16). Parents of children with ASD in the ABA group reported significantly lower parental stress scores, lower affective symptoms scores and higher marital satisfaction scores compared to the other two groups. These results are suggestive of the beneficial effect that an ABA program can have on the family unit.

Past studies have looked at what factors influence a parent's process when choosing interventions for their child or children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In the interest of conducting a future study that will have parents prioritize already known factors by having them rank their influence on their decision, this study serves as a pilot. The current study is a feasibility study to determine if Q methodology is a viable research method for this field of study. The study found that several factors were revealed as having the most influence on decision making, and several factors had the least influence. The Q methodology was found to be a viable study method when used online.
