This M.S. report provides an evaluative review of research on parental influences on adolescent sexual decision-making. Data show that a significant proportion of never-married female and male teens (ages 15-19) have had sexual intercourse at least once. Adolescent decisions on sexuality and possible consequences such as pregnancy or sexually-transmitted diseases may have profound personal and social impacts. Theoretical and empirical domains of parental influence are reviewed, including communication, morality, family structure and context, parental control, as well as the role of media. This review shows that adolescent sexuality has changed over time due to socio-historical factors and that parents continue to have an influence on their children0́9s decision-making abilities. Implications for applied professionals and researchers are discussed.

Parents are central to adolescents' lives and extensive research shows that parents can influence adolescent and young adults' sexual decision-making in positive ways. However, the ability of interventions to help parents influence their children's sexual health has been modest. In many cases, interventions for parents have not been guided by theory or strong research and many interventions for parents are based on only a general sense that more communication between parents and their children on topics related to sexuality is helpful. Currently, millions of dollars in public funding in the United States are designated for programs to reduce teen pregnancy and prevent sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, many foundations and individuals contribute significant funds to organizations that implement programs that strive to improve adolescent sexual health. Increasingly, there is an interest in including program components for parents in order to help them to positively influence their teens' sexual decision-making.

While there has been considerable research done on the factors that act as protective influences during adolescence, little attention has been paid to the effect they have on the sexual lives of young adults. In this paper, I explore the impact of religion and parent attitudes' on the sexual decision-making of a nationally representative sample of female college students (N=1000). Additionally, I examine whether the influence of these elements changes with regard to the type of sexual behavior experienced. The results indicate that church attendance and parents' attitudes both separately impact the sexual attitudes of college women. Furthermore, these effects differ when past sexual behaviors are considered. The implications of such findings, as well as study limitations and directions for future research, are discussed.

Various influences on adolescent sexuality have been studied in the past. Previous research suggests that parents can be instrumental in an adolescent's decision to delay sexual intercourse. Past research suggests that parent-adolescent communication about sex is also associated with delayed sexual intercourse by adolescents. However, how parents are involved as well as the content of the communication process have not been studied at length. Therefore, focus groups of middle class, European American male and female adolescents and their parents were conducted. Their comments were used to determine how parents are involved in the sexual socialization of their children as well as to shed light on the content and process of communication between adolescents and parents about sex. Findings suggest that parents are influential through role modeling and monitoring of activities. Results also indicate that little communication is taking place between adolescents and parents regarding sex. Ideas are presented as to why communication is lacking along with ideas on how to broach the subject.

Adolescent sexual behavior is at the forefront of social science research because it is central to a number of social and medical issues; it remains a major public concern. Underlying factors that influence adolescent sexual behavior are investigated within a sociological framework. Aspects of sexuality are explored through the application of self-control theory which posits that parents are responsible for development of self-control in their children, and that the level of self-control determines the propensity to engage in risk-related behavior. It is hypothesized that adolescent perceptions of parental warmth and control influence adolescent level of self-control; that level of self-control influences engagement in risk-taking behavior; and that risk-taking behavior influences whether or not adolescents feel they are at risk for acquiring STDs. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study employs structural equation modeling using LISREL. Results showed adolescent level of self-control influences risk-taking behavior, and that engagement in risk-taking behavior does influence adolescent perception of risk for acquiring STDs. The findings are of great value for primary and secondary educators, public officials and policy makers, guidance counselors, parents or other concerned family members, and even for adolescents.

Abstract: This book presents the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the Committee on Child Development Research and Public Policy within the National Research Council. The panel examined research and existing programs which address the areas of adolescent sexuality, pregnancy, and childbearing with the intent of making recommendations for policy making, program design, program evaluation, and research. The panel's report is presented in chapters addressing the following topics: trends in adolescent sexuality and fertility, society and changing roles of adolescents, determinants of sexual behavior, effects of adolescent childbearing, interventions, and priorities for data collection, research, policies, and programs. An accompanying volume contains the working papers on which the report was based. The working papers address three broad areas, which are: 1) influences on early sexual and fertility behavior, 2) consequences of early sexual and fertility behavior, and 3) programs and policies related to teen pregnancy and sexuality.
