Interest in the study of kinship, a key area of anthropological enquiry, has recently reemerged. Dubbed 'the new kinship', this interest was stimulated by the 'new genetics' and revived interest in kinship and family patterns. This volume investigates the impact of biotechnology on contemporary understandings of kinship, of family and 'belonging' in a variety of European settings and reveals similarities and differences in how kinship is conceived. What constitutes kinship for different publics? How significant are biogenetic links? What does family resemblance tell us? Why is genetically modified food an issue? Are 'genes' and 'blood' interchangeable? It has been argued that the recent prominence of genetic science and genetic technologies has resulted in a 'geneticization' of social life; the ethnographic examples presented here do show shifts occurring in notions of 'nature' and of what is 'natural'. But, they also illustrate the complexity of contemporary kinship thinking in Europe and the continued interconnectedness of biological and sociological understandings of relatedness and the relationship between nature and nurture.

This handbook compiles the most up-to-date research on transnational families. It employs a dialogue between classical approaches and cutting-edge directions in transnational family research to identify continuities and changes in terms of socioeconomic disparities and actors, and to analyze coexistence. On the one hand, it focuses on different migratory flows around the world and describes their entangled logics; on the other, it is written by an international group of contributors, with a diverse range of professional backgrounds. The handbook presents different thematic perspectives on transnational families, including an analytical focus on gender, global sociodemographic inequalities, power asymmetries, and border- and mobility regimes, as well as the organization of transnational care, transnational fatherhood, ageing, family reunions and return. What does well-being mean when we talk about men and women in the past? Their sheer chances of survival, their protection from want, their social status, their individual agency and their self-esteem were all strongly mediated by the family, the predominant social institution. Family laws and customs of family formation created differences between insiders and outsiders in terms of well-being. Within families, there were strong differences in autonomy, status and freedom between the genders and generations. The book offers a fascinating exploration of gender differences in well-being in many regions of historic Europe, with some comparative perspectives. It explores how historic family systems differed with respect to choosing a marriage partner, transmitting property, living and care conditions of widows and widowers and the position of children born out of wedlock.

Este libro es fruto de un ejercicio intelectual llevado a cabo durante el año 2001 que al final resultó fascinante y altamente productivo. A una serie de antropólogas y antropólogos jóvenes con un trabajo de campo reciente se les planteó que presentaran desde su conocimiento etnográfico la cuestión de la identidad tanto desde el punto de vista relacional, como a partir de su conocimiento etnográfico local. Se trataba, pues, de un reto, que todas aceptaron gustosamente, de producir un argumento teórico a partir de su etnografía. El reto se cumplió ritualmente cada quince días en el seminario de post-grado del Departamento, donde cada autor presentó su argumento etnográfico, que fue debatido ampliamente y apasionadamente entre las asistentes al seminario, la mayoría estudiantes del programa de Doctorado. Fruto del planteamiento inicial, de la argumentación etnográfica de cada autor y de la discursión colectiva es el presente volumen que evidencia la vitalidad argumentativa de la joven antropología en nuestro país, así como la variedad de contextos etnográficos a partir de los que los jóvenes antropólogos producen sus propios conocimientos. Lejos está ya aquella época en que se decía que la antropología en nuestro país sólo se hacía en casa. En este volumen encontramos etnografías en cuatro continentes (Europa, África, Asia y América) y, sobre todo, una sofisticación en el argumento etnográfico que dialoga claramente con los problemas que la antropología como disciplina se plantea actualmente.

The Biotechnology Act in Norway, one of the most restrictive in Europe, forbids egg donation and surrogacy and has rescinded the anonymity clause with respect to donor insemination. Thus, it limits people's choice as to how they can procreate within the boundaries of the nation state. The author pursues this significant datum ethnographically and addresses the issues surrounding contemporary biopolitics in Norway. This involves investigating such fundamental questions as the relation between individual and society, meanings of kinship and relatedness, the moral status of the embryo and the role of science, religion and ethics in state policies. Even though the book takes reproductive technologies as its focus, it reveals much about vital processes that are central to contemporary Norwegian society.
