The interaction between parent, child and book during story-book reading is considered as one of the fundamental instruments required for children to acquire the important elements needed to learn how to read. Parents of grade one children are unsure of their new role in the reading development of their children because their children enter a new phase in their literacy development and reading becomes the centre of their learning activities. The main aim of this research is to compare and describe how parents of grade one children without learning disabilities and parents of children with learning disabilities, perceive their children's participation in home reading activities. Thirty biological parents or legal guardians of grade one children without learning disabilities and ten of grade one children with learning disabilities were used to complete a questionnaire. The results indicated that although children without learning disabilities and children with learning disabilities have similar exposure to home literacy activities, children without learning disabilities become more fluent and efficient readers than their peers with learning disabilities. Children without learning disabilities prefer to be actively involved in the story-book reading act with their parents, whereas children with learning disabilities tend to be more passive and they prefer to engage less in reading activities due to their reading difficulties. The study highlights the importance of story-book reading for grade one children in both groups, as well as independent reading of story-books by these children. Suggestions for further research are provided.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether specific practices of the home literacy environment (HLE) such as parent reading related beliefs and habits, frequency of parent-child literacy activities, and student access to home/community libraries impacted students' literacy achievement. Study participants included 44 parents and 50 teachers of third grade students. Participants completed self-administered Likert-scale surveys. The parent survey measured parents' perceptions of their HLE and beliefs about the importance of literacy. The teacher survey measured teachers' beliefs about students' print literacy knowledge and teachers' beliefs about parental involvement with children in print literacy activities. Follow-up interviews were also conducted to gather more information regarding perceptions of the impact of the HLE on students' literacy achievement. Students' literacy development was measured through analysis of archival multi-year third grade PSSA reading scores. Results of PSSA scores for third grade students in reading indicated that, although parents reported that they believed that specific literacy practices of the HLE impacted students' literacy achievement and that they engaged in those literacy practices, teachers may be more accurate in their beliefs, which indicated a lack of parent engagement in literacy practices with children at home.

The purpose of this study was to identify ways of engaging parents in their children's literacy learning both at home and at school. The parents of my second-grade students were the participants in this study. I studied factors that hindered the involvement of urban parents in school participation and implemented a program that best met their individual needs. Four main literacy initiatives were implemented. These included two home-based activities, Parent Homework and Dialogue Journals, and two school-based activities, Book Lunches and Parent Afternoons. Data were collected over a seven-month period in my urban Ohio second-grade classroom and included pre-and post-interviews of parents who agreed to be interviewed for the study. Results showed that most parents were genuinely interested in participating in their children's education, but it was more difficult for some families to participate due to a variety of factors. These factors included being a single parent, having limited socioeconomic resources, and experiencing serious life events. Single-parent families participated more within the home and two-parent families participated more frequently at the school. Results suggested that African-American parents were just as concerned about their children's education as non-African-American parents. Results also showed that low levels of parental involvement were not necessarily indicative of parent's apathy towards their children's education. Teachers need to become aware of the specific factors that some urban parents face, especially family-type (single versus two-parent), socioeconomic levels, parent perceptions (how they view the school and teachers, their personal experiences in school, etc.), and home environment, in order to engage parents in their children's literacy learning. Teachers need to provide basic and fun ideas for parents to become involved in reading and writing activities with their child. When parents assist the school in working with their children, the children will benefit in a variety of ways.

Abstract: Much of the research on parental involvement in education has focused on its positive influence on school-aged students in the western culture. This thesis examined Chinese parental involvement in the early years by conducting three empirical studies in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Study 1 was designed to be qualitative in nature to examine kindergarten teachers' and parents' perceptions and practices of parental involvement by conducting focus group interviews with 35 teachers and 41 parents. Responses revealed that teachers and parents defined parental involvement differently, in which teachers defined it as parents assisting the teachers or the school, while parents defined it as the support they provide for their child's learning and development. Respondents also had varying opinions about the current parental involvement practices and discussed different family, school and child factors that influence parental involvement. Study 2 investigated the association between parental involvement and children's readiness for school using a sample of 431 children. Parents' involvement was examined using parents' self-report, whereas readiness for school was assessed using two child tests and parents' report. Results indicated that parents practiced more home-based involvement than school-based involvement. All parental involvement dimensions significantly predicted overall readiness for school; however, only the dimensions of Language and Cognitive Activities and Home-School Conferencing were found the significantly predictors of children's Chinese literacy and cognitive development. Study 3 was a follow-up investigation of the changes in parents' perceptions and practices of parental involvement during the transition from kindergarten to primary school. Individual interviews were conducted with 18 parents three months after their child's school entrance. Compared to their involvement during the kindergarten years, most parents indicated a shift to become more academic oriented in their involvement and expressed their dissatisfaction in the distant parent-teacher relationship in the primary school. Implications, limitations and future research directions on this topic are discussed. This study explored parental perceptions of the influence of digital media and technology on children0́9s home reading habits, the routines and repeated activities related to reading that occur within the homes of six families located in a mixed rural/urban area of Northern Utah. Data gathered showed how parent0́9s childhood experiences influenced the creation of rules, spatial arrangements, routines, and family identity. Comparisons were made to Bronfenbrenner0́9s ecological systems model, specifically in the areas of dyads, N + 2 systems, microsystems, molar activities, settings, roles, and transitions. Findings showed parents have concerns about how to best foster reading at home within a society inundated by technology and digital media. Recommendations are given for schools to consider and leverage roles played by parents in development of reading and literacy skills at home and how technology and digital media can support those skills.

There is a mutual dependence between poverty and academic achievement, creative pedagogies for low-income pupils, school models that ‘beat the odds’, and the resiliency of low-income families dedicated to the academic success of their children. This book examines the connection between poverty and literacy, looking at the potential roles and responsibilities of teachers, school administrators, researchers, and policymakers in closing the achievement gap and in reducing the effects of poverty on the literacy skill development of low-income children. There are numerous suggestions about how to improve schools so that they respond to the needs of low-income children; some argue for school reform, while others advocate social reform, and yet others suggest combining both educational reform and social reform. Without a strong foundation in literacy, children are all too often denied access to a rich and diverse curriculum. Reading and writing are passports to achievement in many other curricular areas, and literacy education plays an important role in moving people out of poverty toward greater self-sufficiency post-graduation. Schools and home environments share responsibility for literacy skill development; in school, literacy equals the acquisition of reading and writing skills, but it is also a social practice key to social mobility. The achievement gap between low-income, middle-class, and upper middle-class students illustrates the power of socioeconomic factors outside school. This book was originally published as two special issues of Reading & Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties.
