Despite opposition from Parisians, the leaders of Paris are powering ahead with plans to build skyscrapers and "reinvent" the world's most beautiful city. In this book, forty-seven architects, writers, lawyers, sustainability consultants, and others, many of them Parisians, cry "Stop!" City Hall's plans spell catastrophe for the beauty of Paris. Without consulting independent experts and without looking at alternatives, Paris City Hall is going to "modernize" a city that is already at the cutting edge of high-tech development and is already the modern city that other cities most imitate. The experts in this book argue from every point of view, aesthetic, environmental, social, and architectural, that skyscrapers do not fit in Paris. They will destroy the city's signal characteristic, its beauty. The authors ask the world to stand up with the people of Paris and save the beauty of the City of Light.

Far And Away written by Andrew Solomon and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-23 with History categories.

From the winner of the National Book Award and the National Books Critics’ Circle Award—and one of the most original thinkers of our time—“Andrew Solomon’s magisterial Far and Away collects a quarter-century of soul-shaking essays” (Vanity Fair). Far and Away chronicles Andrew Solomon’s writings about places undergoing seismic shifts—political, cultural, and spiritual. From his stint on the barricades in Moscow in 1991, when he joined artists in resisting the coup whose failure ended the Soviet Union, his 2002 account of the rebirth of culture in Afghanistan following the fall of the Taliban, his insightful appraisal of a Myanmar seeped in contradictions as it slowly, fitfully pushes toward freedom, and many other stories of profound upheaval, this book provides a unique window onto the very idea of social change. With his signature brilliance and compassion, Solomon demonstrates both how history is altered by individuals, and how personal identities are altered when governments alter. A journalist and essayist of remarkable perception and prescience, Solomon captures the essence of these cultures. Ranging across seven continents and twenty-five years, these “meaty dispatches…are brilliant geopolitical travelogues that also comprise a very personal and reflective resume of the National Book Award winner’s globe-trotting adventures” (Elle). Far and Away takes a magnificent journey into the heart of extraordinarily diverse experiences: “You will not only know the world better after having seen it through Solomon’s eyes, you will also care about it more” (Elizabeth Gilbert).

Order Without Design written by Alain Bertaud and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-04 with Political Science categories.

An argument that operational urban planning can be improved by the application of the tools of urban economics to the design of regulations and infrastructure. Urban planning is a craft learned through practice. Planners make rapid decisions that have an immediate impact on the ground—the width of streets, the minimum size of land parcels, the heights of buildings. The language they use to describe their objectives is qualitative—“sustainable,” “livable,” “resilient”—often with no link to measurable outcomes. Urban economics, on the other hand, is a quantitative science, based on theories, models, and empirical evidence largely developed in academic settings. In this book, the eminent urban planner Alain Bertaud argues that applying the theories of urban economics to the practice of urban planning would greatly improve both the productivity of cities and the welfare of urban citizens. Bertaud explains that markets provide the indispensable mechanism for cities' development. He cites the experience of cities without markets for land or labor in pre-reform China and Russia; this “urban planners' dream” created inefficiencies and waste. Drawing on five decades of urban planning experience in forty cities around the world, Bertaud links cities' productivity to the size of their labor markets; argues that the design of infrastructure and markets can complement each other; examines the spatial distribution of land prices and densities; stresses the importance of mobility and affordability; and critiques the land use regulations in a number of cities that aim at redesigning existing cities instead of just trying to alleviate clear negative externalities. Bertaud concludes by describing the new role that joint teams of urban planners and economists could play to improve the way cities are managed.

Paris is the City of Light, love, and savoir vivre. And this world-class capital is surely one of the planet's most photographed destinations, whether by tourists snapping a quick souvenir shot or professionals with high-end cameras. The brief preview we provide here shows how special this city really is. Paris has never been showcased as impressively, meaningfully, or dramatically as it is by the French photographer Serge Ramelli. His vision of the city--like all of his images--is unmistakably inspired by cinema. In addition to his second passion, filmmaking (which he does when he's not taking pictures), he is also fascinated by the films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Ridley Scott. Ramelli's interpretation of the bustling metropolis of Paris is at once impressive and fabulous. Pulsing with life both day and night, the city appears nearly devoid of people--a heavily symbolic place with many facets to explore, shining with an inimitable light. SELLING POINTS: * The metropolis of Paris, presented with Serge Ramelli's dramatic vision * A fabulous and fascinating tour of the city in an incomparable light * Film and photography meld into a black-and-white work of art 100 black & white photographs
