The majority of this collection is made up of correspondence to Parker Pillsbury and P.B. Cogswell. These letters were written during the late 1800s when Pillsbury was an advocate for womens and slavery rights. There are also many letters from intellectual giants from this period such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. Most of the letters from these well-known people have to do with personal matters, but some do deal with professional business. This collection is basically divided into two parts, letters to Pillsbury and letters to Cogswell, which have a range of dates from the 1850s to the 1880s. In the letters addressed to Pillsbury, the bulk is in the later years of his life, the 1870s to 1898. In the letters addressed to Cogswell, the bulk is in the first half of the 1850s, mainly 1853 and 1855. These letters are organized alphabetically by the senders last name. In cases where the letters cannot be recognizably addressed, they are in a group of unidentified letters. There are also photographs that were found with these letters, and placed in their own group. Throughout the letters, there were many pamphlets and programs. When these papers could not be connected with a particular letter, they were also placed in their own category. There are also a few letters to both Pillsburys and Cogswells wives.
