When Evelyn Walsh was diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinsons Plus, her world came screeching to a halt. She suddenly found everything she valued the most was being taken awayher freedom, her health, and her confidence. As things got worse, she thought the unthinkable: Might she even lose her ability to communicate? Her left arm would constantly engage in alien movements; it had a mind of its own. She injured herself on multiple occasions, and would often think about strapping the arm down so she wouldnt have to deal with its unwelcome consequences. In this honest account, she shares her feelings about being diagnosed as well as the problems she faced, how she overcame some of them, and how she learned to accept others. She also shares what shes learned about Corticobasal Degeneration, which was deemed the most likely cause of many of her issues. Whether youre seeking to learn from someone whos also battling Parkinsons, want to support a loved one whos coping with the disease, or want to understand the complicated health issues associated with the condition, youll discover important truths in Parkinsons Plus.

At the time when "Parkinson's Disease" is diagnosed in a patient, roughly two thirds of dopaminergic neurons of substantia nigra are already degenerated. The onset of the disease must, therefore, be much earlier. This book deals with early diagnosis and early preventive treatment which may sustain the process underlying the disease. By use of psychometric, kinesiologic, physiologic, histologic, biochemical, endocrinologic, pharmacologic and imaging techniques, including positron-emission tomography and brain mapping, specialists tried to focus on new diagnostic criteria. New methods including psychometric evaluation, apparative measurement of movement, analysis of peripheral blood and urinary constituents have supplemented this approach. It has been agreed that early preventive therapy consists of low dosis of L-DOPA plus benserazide, L-deprenyl and dopaminergic agonists.

A Parkinson’s patient for the last six years, he takes us through his emotional and physical journey about living with Parkinson’s. The book serves as an excellent handbook for newly diagnosed and existing patients, care partners and family members. Written from a patient’s point of view, the book is a quick read for all who want to familiarize themselves with the disease. This also gives the practicing doctors and health workers an insight into the thoughts, emotions and expectations of Parkinson’s patients. Some of the questions such as how does one emotionally cope with the diagnosis of a critical illness or how does one communicate the diagnosis to one’s near and dear ones are faced by not only Parkinson’s but all the patients diagnosed with a critical illness. This perhaps is the first book written by a Parkinson’s patient in India. The author believes that the socio-cultural context makes a significant difference in the way one responds to an illness. A book that is both absorbing and informative…
