La Ruta de la Piedra es una guía comentada e ilustrada del camino medieval que unía las canteras antiguas de Ajarte con la Catedral de Santa María de Vitoria-Gasteiz. A lo largo de 15 km. se explica la procedencia de los materiales de construcción, su extracción, transporte, manufactura y colocación final. Las canteras antiguas, con frentes de explotación hectométricos de apenas 1 m. de altura, suministraron calizas paleocenas para sillería, escultura y fabricación de cal. En el recorrido también se visitan las canteras antiguas de calcarenitas campanienses que se emplearon en la mampostería. A lo largo del camino medieval se comentan, paso a paso, aquellos aspectos geológicos que inciden directa o indirectamente en el monumento. La Ruta de la Piedra y la posterior visita a la Catedral de Santa María permiten reconocer todo el proceso constructivo de una catedral gótica, desde el arranque de la piedra hasta su actual restauración. La recuperación del templo, bajo el lema Abierto por Obras, está supeditada al Plan Director de Restauración galardonado con el premio Europa Nostra de la Unión Europea. En dicho plan se describen, entre otros aspectos, los materiales empleados en el templo, su procedencia, características del sustrato y otros temas geológicos que inciden en la descripción y conservación del monumento. Con La Ruta de la Piedra la rehabilitación del templo se abre al exterior a través de un espectacular hayedo, aunando los esfuerzos de canteros, carreteros, escultores, maestros geómetras, albañiles y otros muchos oficios, que manipularon las Lumaquelas de Ajarte para construir la Catedral Vieja de Vitoria-Gasteiz. El gratificante paseo por una calzada medieval, desde las canteras antiguas hasta el templo gótico, permite percibir el monumento y su construcción de un modo más vehemente y con unas sensaciones más sutiles, muy diferentes de aquellas que se repiten en las visitas guiadas convencionales.
