Sbastien Erard's (1752-1831) inventions have had an enormous impact on instruments and musical life and are still at the foundation of piano building today. Drawing on an unusually rich set of archives from both the Erard firm and the Erard family, author Robert Adelson shows how the Erard piano played an important and often leading role in the history of the instrument, beginning in the late eighteenth century and continuing into the final decades of the nineteenth. The Erards were the first piano builders in France to prioritise the more sonorous grand piano, sending gifts of their new model to both Haydn and Beethoven. Erard's famous double-escapement action, which improved the instrument's response while at the same time producing a more powerful tone, revolutionised both piano construction and repertoire. Thanks to these inventions, the Erard firm developed close relationships with the greatest pianist composers of the nineteenth century, including Hummel, Liszt, Moscheles and Mendelssohn. The book also presents new evidence concerning Pierre Erard's homosexuality, which helps us to understand his reluctance to found a family to carry on the Erard tradition, a reluctance that would spell the end of the golden era of the firm and lead to its eventual demise. The book closes with the story of Pierre's widow Camille, who directed the firm from 1855 until 1889. Her influential position in the male-dominated world of instrument building was unique for a woman of her time.

In addition, this book is a celebration of America's love affair with the piano, ranging from firsthand accounts by piano makers, conservatory teachers, competition judges, and restorers to humorous and revelatory anecdotes about such stars as Artur Rubinstein, Lorin Hollander, Ruth Laredo, Liberace, Claude Bolling, Teddy Wilson, and Herbie Hancock--who tell you what inspired them to play, practice, and perform. A warm and intuitive portrait of the secret Paris—one closed to all but a knowing few—The Piano Shop on the Left Bank is the perfect book for music lovers, or for anyone who longs to recapture a lost passion. Thad Carhart never realized there was a gap in his life until he happened upon Desforges Pianos, a demure little shopfront in his Pairs neighborhood that seemed to want to hide rather than advertise its wares. Like Alice in Wonderland, he found his attempts to gain entry rebuffed at every turn. An accidental introduction finally opened the door to the quartier’s oddest hangout, where locals—from university professors to pipefitters—gather on Friday evenings to discuss music, love, and life over a glass of wine. Luc, the atelier’s master, proves an excellent guide to the history of this most gloriously impractical of instruments. A bewildering variety passes through his restorer’s hands: delicate ancient pianofortes, one perhaps the onetime possession of Beethoven. Great hulking beasts of thunderous voice. And the modest piano “with the heart of a lion” that was to become Thad’s own.

The Positive Pianist written by Thomas J. Parente and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Music categories.

In The Positive Pianist: How Flow Can Bring Passion to Practice and Performance, author Thomas J. Parente applies the concept of flow to the practice of piano playing, demonstrating how student musicians can experience enjoyment and confidence from succeeding at something that challenges them to an engaging level. By using Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's theory of flow to musical performance, Parente shows that linking productivity and enjoyment in piano playing has a positive impact on students, motivating them to practice more in order to experience flow again; this creates optimal learning conditions for piano practicing. As the chapters progress, Parente shows students how to evaluate their own progress and offers teachers the tools to impart on their students an optimal practice method: one informed by flow. Parente argues for an objective, goal-oriented backdrop that will lead piano students to achieve greater confidence, accuracy, and musicality. The Positive Pianist draws on the author's forty years of teaching experience and research to show piano students and their teachers how to develop a productive, focused mental state when practicing the piano.

This book is excellent for the beginning adult or child piano player who wishes to learn how to play Christmas Carols. Making music is our birthright, and nothing else can satisfy this need - so congratulations on taking this step; you are about to embark on a wonderful adventure! In the words of the wonderful and inspiring pianist and teacher Arminda Canteros, with whom I studied many years ago, "Playing the piano is like love. The more you give to it, the more that comes back, which then grows your love to give again". I sincerely hope that the spiritual uplift that can be yours through playing these carols will allow for this loop of love to take hold as it has for me and countless others who have taken solace, expressed joy, celebrated happy occasions, entertained, and simply had fun through contact with the piano's wonderful keys - keys to happiness, keys to fulfillment, and keys to living.

Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Joy Roe are perhaps the most thrilling young duo performing today, offering adrenalized classical concerts that are revolutionizing the piano duo experience for the 21st century. Described as "Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers transposed from the dance floor to the keyboard" (The Southampton Press) and "the intense synchronization of genius" (ThirdCoast Digest), Greg and Liz bring their joyous camaraderie and refined artistry to the concert stage, dazzling audiences around the world as a four-hand and two-piano team. The Anderson & Roe Duos & Duets series features inspiring arrangements as performed by the duo---from settings of treasured opera melodies to medleys of popular movie music. The pieces are edited with fingering and other directions that facilitate rehearsal and performance, making them accessible for advancing students as well as for concert performers. Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion, considered one of the monuments of music literature, is filled with multidimensional levels of symbolism, theological understanding, and psychological insight. In this awe-inspiring arrangement for two pianos, four hands, five movements from the original work have been carefully selected. Together they retain the dramatic arch of the story, but pare the music down to a more manageable duration suitable for performance on recitals. Two copies required.
