We develop a computationally efficient iterative algorithm for source localization and tracking using active/passive arrays with uncertainties in sensor locations. We suppose that the available data consist of time delay, or differential time delay, measurements of the signal wavefront across the array. We consider a general senario in which the array uncertainties may be correlated in time and in space. The proposed algorithm is optimal in the sense that it converges montonically to the Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimate of the source trajectory parameters. In the case of multiple sources, the algorithm makes an essential use of the information available from all sources to reduce the array uncertainties (the so-called array callibration) and thus to improve the localization accuracy of each signal source. We also derive new expressions for the log-likelihood gradient, the Hessian, and the Fisher's information matrix, that may be used for efficient implementation of gradient based algorithms, and for assessing the mean square error of the resulting ML parameter estimates.

"Research over the last decade has led to technological advances in high frequency active and passive detection technology and signal processing. An emerging application area is the standoff detection of concealed object such as weapons and explosives using penetrating electromagnetic radiation such as terahertz waves (THz). Here sensor arrays are employed in the near field to image the concealed objects. A new approach is investigated to improve upon methods such as Fourier inversion and sum and delay beamforming. A method based on the Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) filter technique is developed to localize source points in the electric field coming from a subject. To pinpoint near field sources with precision, this MVDR routine calculates filter responses along a plane that has direction of arrival angle and range axes. To understand its limitations, this new method is tested for angular resolution in various directions of arrival, ranges, and SNR levels. The results show that this technique has potential to accurately detect closely spaced point sources when only a few sensors are used to collect measurements"--Abstract.

Passive source localization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is an important field of research with numerous applications in signal processing and wireless communications. One purpose of a WSN is to determine the position of a signal emitted from a source. This position is estimated based on received noisy measurements from sensors (anchor nodes) that are distributed over a geographical area. In most cases, the sensor positions are assumed to be known exactly, which is not always reasonable. Even if the sensor positions are measured initially, they can change over time. Due to the sensitivity of source location estimation accuracy with respect to the a priori sensor position information, the source location estimates obtained can vary significantly regardless of the localization method used. Therefore, the sensor position uncertainty should be considered to obtain accurate estimates. Among the many localization approaches, signal strength based methods have the advantages of low cost and simple implementation. The received signal energy mainly depends on the transmitted power and path loss exponent which are often unknown in practical scenarios. In this dissertation, three received signal strength difference (RSSD) based methods are presented to localize a source with unknown transmit power. A nonlinear RSSD-based model is formulated for systems perturbed by noise. First, an effective low complexity constrained weighted least squares (CWLS) technique in the presence of sensor uncertainty is derived to obtain a least squares initial estimate (LSIE) of the source location. Then, this estimate is improved using a computationally efficient Newton method. The Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived to determine the effect of sensor location uncertainties on the source location estimate. Results are presented which show that the proposed method achieves the CRLB when the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is sufficiently high. Least squares (LS) based methods are typically used to obtain the location estimate that minimizes the data vector error instead of directly minimizing the unknown parameter estimation error ... .

"Traditional source localization problems have been considered with linear and planar antenna arrays. In this research work, we assume that the sources are located within a uniformly spaced circular sensor array. Using a modified Metropolis algorithm and Polak-Ribière conjugate gradients, a hybrid optimization algorithm is proposed to localize sources within a two dimensional uniform circular sensor array, which suffers from far field attenuation. The developed algorithm is capable of accurately locating the position of a single, stationary source within 1% of a wavelength and 1° of angular displacement. In the single stationary source case, the simulated Cramer-Rao Lower Bound has also shown low noise susceptibility for a reasonable signal to noise ratio. Additionally, the localization of multiple stationary sources within the array is presented and tracking capabilities for a slowly moving non-stationary source is also demonstrated. In each case, results are presented, analyzed and discussed. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm has also been validated through hardware experimentation. The design and construction of four microstrip patch antennas and a wire antenna have been completed to emulate a circular sensor array and the enclosed source, respectively. Within this array, data has been collected at the four sensors from several fixed source positions and fitted into the proposed algorithm for source localization. The convergence of the algorithm with both simulated data and data collected from hardware are compared and sources of error and potential improvements are proposed"--Abstract.
