In this second book of what will be a four-volume series, the authors present, in a mathematically rigorous way, the essential foundations of both the theory and practice of algorithms, approximation, and optimization—essential topics in modern applied and computational mathematics. This material is the introductory framework upon which algorithm analysis, optimization, probability, statistics, machine learning, and control theory are built. This text gives a unified treatment of several topics that do not usually appear together: the theory and analysis of algorithms for mathematicians and data science students; probability and its applications; the theory and applications of approximation, including Fourier series, wavelets, and polynomial approximation; and the theory and practice of optimization, including dynamic optimization. When used in concert with the free supplemental lab materials, Foundations of Applied Mathematics, Volume 2: Algorithms, Approximation, Optimization teaches not only the theory but also the computational practice of modern mathematical methods. Exercises and examples build upon each other in a way that continually reinforces previous ideas, allowing students to retain learned concepts while achieving a greater depth. The mathematically rigorous lab content guides students to technical proficiency and answers the age-old question “When am I going to use this?” This textbook is geared toward advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in mathematics, data science, and machine learning.

This marks the 100th volume to appear in the Applied Mathematical Sci ences series. Partial Differential Equations, by Fritz John, the first volume of the series, appeared in 1971. One year prior to its appearance, the then mathematics editor of Springer-Verlag, Klaus Peters, organized a meeting to look into the possibility of starting a series slanted toward applications. The meeting took place in New Rochelle, at the home of Fritz and Char lotte John. K.O. Friedrichs, Peter Lax, Monroe Donsker, Joe Keller, and others from the Courant Institute (previously, the Institute for Mathemat ical Sciences) were present as were Joe LaSalle and myself, the two of us having traveled down from Providence for the meeting. The John home, a large, comfortable house, especially lent itself to the informal, relaxed, and wide-ranging discussion that ensued. What emerged was a consensus that mathematical applications appeared to be poised for a period of growth and that there was a clear need for a series committed to applied mathematics. The first paragraph ofthe editorial statement written at that time reads as follows: The mathematization of all sciences, the fading of traditional scientific boundaries, the impact of computer technology, the growing importance of mathematical-computer modeling and the necessity of scientific planning all create the need both in education and research for books that are introductory to and abreast of these developments.

This volume comprises high-quality works in pure and applied mathematics from the mathematical communities in Spain and Brazil. A wide range of subjects are covered, ranging from abstract algebra, including Lie algebras, commutative semigroups, and differential geometry, to optimization and control in real world problems such as fluid mechanics, the numerical simulation of cancer PDE models, and the stability of certain dynamical systems. The book is based on contributions presented at the Second Joint Meeting Spain-Brazil in Mathematics, held in Cádiz in December 2018, which brought together more than 330 delegates from around the world. All works were subjected to a blind peer review process. The book offers an excellent summary of the recent activity of Spanish and Brazilian research groups and will be of interest to researchers, PhD students, and graduate scholars seeking up-to-date knowledge on these pure and applied mathematics subjects.

This volume is the Proceedings of the symposium held at the University of Wyoming in August, 1985, to honor Gail Young on his seventieth birthday (which actually took place on October 3, 1985) and on the occasion of his retirement. Nothing can seem more natural to a mathematician in this country than to honor Gail Young. Gail embodies all the qualities that a mathematician should possess. He is an active and effective research mathematician, having written over sixty pa pers in topology, n-dimensional analysis, complex variables, and "miscellanea." He is an outstanding expositor, as his fine book Topology, written with J. G. Hocking (Addison Wesley, 1961), amply demonstrates. He has a superlative record in public office of outstanding, unstinting service to the mathematical community and to the cause of education. But what makes Gail unique and special is that throughout all aspects of his distinguished career, he has emphasized human values in everything he has done. In touching the lives of so many of us, he has advanced the entire profession. Deservedly, he has innumerable friends in the mathematical community, the academic community, and beyond.

"Complete Ordinary Level Mathematics Passport " as the name suggests is one of the most recent ordinary level Mathematics books which addresses almost all the requirements of many examination boards at this level across the world. Because the author is a teacher based in Cameroon and has been teaching in secondary schools in Cameroon for more than two decades, special focus has been given to the Cameroon GCE Ordinary level Mathematics 570, the WAEC and the CGSE syllabuses. This 630 pages book covers elaborately almost all the work from form One to Five and more. It is the wish of the author that students from poor countries such as his, should be able to obtain and use just a single book per discipline throughout the secondary school. In these way issues of children failing to do assignments because of lack of textbooks will be illuminated.Concepts, skills, how and why they work are well explained and illustrated. Many recently introduced topics such as logic, networks and flow diagrams have been well treated. An attempt has been made to use mostly real life examples drawn from West and Central Africa especially Cameroon for which the book was originally intended to be used. Names of persons are local names from the English Speaking regions of Cameroon. However, these names do not in anyway distort or change the subject matter. The book contains: * Many graded examples and exercises. * Many structural and essay type questions for revision and practice. * Many multiple choice exercises. * A detailed glossary of most of the technical terms used in the book. * An index to facilitated quick references of the sub issues discussed in the book. * An appendix on the use of the scientific calculator at the secondary school level. Comments on the Book: Highly student centered with a wide range of topics elaborately covered. User friendly with many questions for revision and practice. By Ngwa Kenneth Akobabila (MA Mathematics Education, Teacher GBHS Mankon) Has vividly taken into consideration the requirements of the new Cameroon General Certificate of Education syllabus 570. By Nfor Samuel Ndi (DIPCEG Mathematics, RPI Mathematics NWR Cameroon)

Love And Math written by Edward Frenkel and has been published by Basic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-01 with Mathematics categories.

An awesome, globe-spanning, and New York Times bestselling journey through the beauty and power of mathematics What if you had to take an art class in which you were only taught how to paint a fence? What if you were never shown the paintings of van Gogh and Picasso, weren't even told they existed? Alas, this is how math is taught, and so for most of us it becomes the intellectual equivalent of watching paint dry. In Love and Math, renowned mathematician Edward Frenkel reveals a side of math we've never seen, suffused with all the beauty and elegance of a work of art. In this heartfelt and passionate book, Frenkel shows that mathematics, far from occupying a specialist niche, goes to the heart of all matter, uniting us across cultures, time, and space. Love and Math tells two intertwined stories: of the wonders of mathematics and of one young man's journey learning and living it. Having braved a discriminatory educational system to become one of the twenty-first century's leading mathematicians, Frenkel now works on one of the biggest ideas to come out of math in the last 50 years: the Langlands Program. Considered by many to be a Grand Unified Theory of mathematics, the Langlands Program enables researchers to translate findings from one field to another so that they can solve problems, such as Fermat's last theorem, that had seemed intractable before. At its core, Love and Math is a story about accessing a new way of thinking, which can enrich our lives and empower us to better understand the world and our place in it. It is an invitation to discover the magic hidden universe of mathematics.
