From Latin through the Romance languages, which types of past participle survived? Which older, "irregular" types disappeared and which older, "regular" types proliferated? Which new types of past participles emerged, which proved popular in standard Romance languages, and which exist in a wide range of dialects? The author explores reasons for the expansion or contraction of each type, in each area.

Quite a lot of people might think that English spoken in Great Britain is the same as English spoken in the United States of America, but that is not correct. English that is spoken in Great Britain is called British English and English spoken in the United States of America is called American English. These two variations differ in grammar, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, idioms, etc. In my paper I focus on verbs that have a regular (-ed) and an irregular (-t) form for the past tense and the past participle. The purpose of this diploma paper is to discover which form is used more in British English and in American English. There are a couple of reasons which form prevails in certain situations. One form is used more in events with a durative implication, other form is used more for punctual events. The same can be said when it comes to speech and writing or using the passive voice. I achieve these results with examining two corpora and I also analyse how the two forms developed in the nineteenth and the twentieth century in Google Books. The results show that the irregular form is used more in British English than in American English.

In Past Participle author Alexander Ihenetu advises us to pay as much attention to our English grammar and usage as we pay to our sciences and mathematics. After all, he reasons, in professional and educated society, the most respected and confident are quite often impeccable with their English. He goes on to identify factors that negatively affect our English usage and they include: the multicultural and multiethnic nature of our society; the notion that grammar does not matter as long as people understand you; the polluting influence of street language; social media communication styles ; rap song and slang terminology; lack of preparation in classic Latin( the root of many English words and phrases); too much watching of television at the expense of passionate reading of novels, magazines and newspapers. Moreover, passage through high school and college is not always a guarantee of literacy and good writing skills. The author expresses surprise at the pervasive lack of use of the past participle tenses of English verbs in todays society. He therefore puts much emphasis on their accurate use through error examples, corresponding explanations and relevant corrections and remarks. Using seven hundred examples, he exposes widely-used expressions and phrases that abuse the basic rules of English grammar and syntax, including errors of redundancy, double negatives, subject and verb disagreement, nonstandard, colloquial and informal usage, incomplete, awkward and illogical sentences, wrong applications and wrong concepts, wrong spellings, non-existent words and so on.

In this book, the traditional definition of ‘grammaticalization’ is challenged in the light of current developments in grammar theory. The main innovation of this approach is the focus on the feature composition of lexical items. From this perspective, the loss of past participle agreement in Catalan is analyzed on the basis of newly collected data as a consequence of the grammaticalization of formal features. The emergence of syntactic formal features through grammaticalization is understood as a last-resort repair mechanism for pragmatically costly derivations. Further far-reaching implications of this proposal under discussion are: the interplay between (re-)parametrization, economy, cyclicity, and grammaticalization; the characterization of free variation under a modified version of the Interface Hypothesis; and the precedence of syntactic over morphological change. This book is not only of interest to specialists in Romance languages but also to anyone working on diachronic linguistics.

Are the past participial forms that occur in passive and perfect periphrases substantially identical or should they rather be distinguished into accidentally homophonous passive and perfect(ive) participles? This book discusses the long-standing mystery of past participial (non-)identity on the basis of a broad range of synchronic data from Germanic and Romance, eventually focussing on German and English as these draw the most relevant distinctions (e.g. auxiliary alternation, a passive auxiliary that is not BE). Together with some contrastive insights from Slavic as well as the diachrony of passive and perfect periphrases, this clearly points to an identity-view. The novel approach that is laid out suggests that past participles conflate diathetic and aspectual properties. The former cause the suppression of an external argument, whereas the latter impose event-structure sensitive perfectivity, which only induces the completion of a situation if the underlying eventuality denotes a simple change of state. An approach along these lines sheds light on the intricate properties of past participles and the auxiliaries they occur with, the determinants of auxiliary selection as well as the interplay of argument and event structure.

The monograph is the first comprehensive study of changes in past participle marking in Mediaeval English. Before the shape of the past participle as we know it was established, the historical form used to be marked redundantly, attaching both the appropriate suffix and the prefix ge-. The study establishes temporal and geographical conditioning for the loss of prefixal marking as well as the relation between the suffixation and prefixation. As such, it shall be of great interest especially to all those researching in English historical grammar, but also to readers attracted to dialectal studies.
